I did see a map the other day showing predicted land losses due to rising sea levels, and Doncaster is expected to become a coastal town within 50 years.
FFS Slow down and read what I wrote. I’ve lived in Donny 50 odd years including 2 streets that flooded this weekend and you’re trying to tell me about their recent history. That takes a special kind of bellendery
Has anyone (especially those who are in power) stopped to think that the problem is, at least in part, done to the flawed capitalist system - i.e. the 'market' decides where property is built. And as there is more profit in desirable areas, areas which in some cases are in areas likely to flood. Now as capitalists tend to bang on about individuals having the 'freedom' to choose then those who find themselves flooded have no one else to blame. Is it not their own responsibility to have adequate insurance to financially protect themselves against such incidents - only they will find huge leaps in premiums the following year (if they can find an insurer willing to insure). Furthermore the said capitalists (at least some of them) also bang on about the need to reduce state spending - so there is less help in terms of council funds or even less troops/police etc to assist. Now lets be more of a caring nation - lets have better planned or state economy where the profit motive is taken out of the hands of money hungry people who do not give a damn for any consequences as long as they themselves make a fast buck and put it back in the hands of specialists who know better. As posters before me have indicated that there should have been more/better management of the environment - this does come at a price, a price that people should accept. Our country has become obsessed with the 'market' and motivated by profit. which is fine ..... until events happen like the floods and other more horrific events like Grenfell occur. Folks, if the nation elects Mr Johnson's party with any sort of a majority, get ready, I fear a bonfire of workers rights together with a pushback of other regulations that will exacerbate problems that we all face. Time for a more 'managed' or 'planned' economy. Time for Socialism, at least in part.
I have many mates who live up the road in Surrey and they laugh when I mentioned this, they hate it especially when they are tarred with the " you must be rich you live in Surrey " My sons who live in Upton said 6 chinooks were grafting all through the night I live in Pompey and have many mates who live up the road in various Surrey towns and villages and I put this same question to them , I got shot down, they said, quote: "we know that all Yorkshire folk ain't thick as mince and talk in a stupid accent, missing out certain words" he said we must have the anti south 100 army personnel just been deployed to Doncaster this morning as well as the 6 chinooks that were working through the night on Sunday
one of the commentators said the problem in the Doncaster area was caused because the River Don is tidal. Surely Doncaster is too far inland for that to be right. Can see why the flow would be held back near the coast when the tide is in but 50 miles inland??
Snap, never said anything about recent, unless 1923, 1932 and 1947 are recent to you Snap, so have family members plus I've lived and worked in Donny for 29 yes so know a bit about the history of the area But oh well you can't reason with stupid, maybe all those floods you've not been in have puddled your memory
Donny do you subscribe to the view that the ‘poorer’ end of doncaster is allowed to flood to save the more affluent areas ?
The Don feeds into the Humber at Goole roughly 20 miles away. Fishlake is halfway inbetween. The area is also very flat.
There was definitely a strong suspicion that the gates were deliberately opened to the beck in Toll Bar in 2007 rather than flood the town centre. I have no evidence to support or challenge that view.
being donny born and bred i lived in woodlands, scawthorpe ( bottom of jossey lane), and bentley ( 61 high st) and i can remember ( i'm 63) bentley and toll bar flooding in the 60's and 70's all the way though arksey to barnby dunn
Fishlake was also an inland port in the 1700's but was drained and Dutch dykes put in, so all the Don had done is reclaim it's old land back
my great grandparents lived in fishlake it was more of a small hamlet then as opposed to a village ( or fishcake as we called it) at a place called "rose cottage" which as kids we thought we owned as their name was roe as in roe's cottage fish lake used to flood a little then but not to the extent it does now, more houses on a floodplain and sheffield sorting their flood defences out the water has to go somewhere and it aint going to go back upstream
But toll bar and arksey aren’t on the same road. There’s always flooding between arksey and Barney dun but no one lives there.
And when you lived on Jossey lane do you recall Clevedon flooding prior to 2007? As it did then and it has again this weekend, and can you confirm it’s not really ‘close’ to the Don too. As he seems to think I can’t remember where I lived for 20 years. you could back up the bloke who thinks I don’t know how old I am or where I live. I mean; it must be pretty common for his mates to have got this close to retirement without knowing where they live FFS.
to be honest i cant remember clevedon cres flooding but that might have something to do with a big f**k off railway embankment running from sprotborough to toll bar all the way between bentley and scawthorpe, and to be fair reading what you're posting and how you're posting it i think i may err in his direction
