I can't believe it's only ten years since Rangers reached a European final and now they have been knocked out by the club who finished 4th in the Luxembourg league. Not only that but St Johnstone lost home and away to a team from Lithuania. Now I know St Johnstone are not exactly giants of Scottish football but the total aggregate attendance of the Lithuanian league was about 65,000 - around 20% of BFC's!! I wonder what these club's turnover per annum? Must be well under £100k. On Thursday Aberdeen (who I would consider Scotland's third club) drew at home with a club who finished seventh in the Bosnian premier and have a difficult challenge to go through. A few years ago I was involved in a discussion on another board comparing the SPL and the Championship.I would now seriously ask if the SPL is as good as the Conference? I bet clubs like Tranmere and Wrexham would comfortably survive in it whereas clubs like Hamilton and Ross County would struggle to survive in League Two.
One thing to take in to consideration though, it's pre season. We drew 3-3 with Guiseley, although in a non competitive match, surely their readiness for the new season in Aberdeen and Perth(St Johnstone) is around the same level as ours.
To be fair to Scottish football the example of Rangers losing is a bit misleading imo. Another way of putting your example could have been attributed to the premiere league for eg Bottom half Championship side Barnsley best prem high flyers and EU finalists Liverpool and Chelsea, plus loss of other eg, Chelsea Bradford. Not saying Scottish Football is first class by any means but I don't think it's as bad as some are making out imo.
Rangers are not the same club they were 10 years back.. After they were dumped out the prem they're still finding their feet.. Only Celtic arf decent in Scotland these day... Oh and of course the ..Mighty Arabs..
Unfortunately I have to agree. Our game has nose dived and the standard of football on offer is very poor and unacceptable. Unfortunately those headless wonders in charge of our game seem to think all is fine. I was at Aberdeen watching their game on Thursday. Poor affair. We really are now officially a third rate footballing nation. I'm going to Tannadice today for our league cup game with very little optimism of seeing much good football or being entertained. Sad days.
Last season Hearts were knocked out by a Maltese team, Aberdeen by Maribor. Year before St Johnstone knocked out by a team from Armenia, Aberdeen by one from Kazakhstan. Year before that Motherwell knocked out by a team from Iceland and St Johnstone by a team from Slovakia. And so on.
It also shows what I know about Scottish football ( f all ) Only take an interest in the Arabs tbh but seem to be a few good Scottish players south of the border ,
Yep, albeit they only opened the main stand. Think they're playing at Ainslie park or somewhere whilst it gets done up this season.
I started watching junior football last season rather than watching the **** on offer in the senior game. Saw a couple of really good games at Broughty Athletic and Lochee United and £8 for the entertainment.
I'm sure Ian will know more about this, but one of the contributing factors to Scottish teams struggling in Europe is the fact that they're playing matches a few weeks before the season actually begins. There's talk of starting the season earlier and having a winter break. I think this would at least help teams such as Aberdeen and St Johnstone be more competitive in the qualification stages of Europe.
