Bosman gave players the power.
I agree, it's all @bossman's fault.
Moans at the commercialism of football. Then takes advantage of said commercialism. Hmmmmmm..........
Could not agree more, Bosman also gave rise to the proliferation of agents in the game.
Again factually incorrect James. But again thanks. Good day to you.
1981 was my first full year of supporting Barnsley, and those were brilliant days to start out as a fan. Yes we've had the promotions and the odd play off and cup near misses along the way, but its hard to go against that team we had in the early 80s.
It's simply, really, the love of the game just isn't there. We could all go watch Penistone Church if we wanted, but we don't because we don't care about football, we care about Barnsley. It's the same all the way from the top to the bottom, it's tribalism, getting one over on the other lot. And so what if the team you watch are a bunch of foreign mercenaries. If people cared about football as a game then the league cup final would get the same number of viewers as the FA cup final and that would have the same number of viewers as the world cup final, because people would just enjoy watching football.
It's a hype job. We could watch the best team in the world put ten past us at Oakwell, score overhead kicks from the halfway line and we'd hate it, because we don't care what we watch as long as we win, so who cares about the stupid money as long as it helps us win?
In a nutshell.
Well the days are gone now (if they ever existed at all) where teams want to win things with just a squad of hometown players, and next to no money spent etc.
They did exist but sadly as you say very unlikely that a team will win anything with local home reared players. Its very unusual for a player to stay at a club longer than 3 years these days. All about money. Loyalty has gone. We as fans are the only loyal ones.
Get ready for the aftermath of the World Cup when certain players have 2 good games and there’s a queue of premier league clubs trying to buy very very ordinary players for disgusting money. It happens every 2 years bart fail. Cisse anyone or maybe poborsky tickles your fancy?
Yes exactly, and its one of the reasons why I admired Matt Le Tissier for his loyalty to Saarfampton. As you say Ian how many players and/or managers stay loyal beyond 3 years at any clubs these days ?.
The Lisbon Lions were all born within ten miles of Celtic Park, with the exception of Bobby Lennox who was born a grand total of 30 miles away in Saltcoats.
And what did they ever win?
Yes but they're a sweaty sock Scotch team Lil, and as any experienced Dundee United fan will tell you... Celtic are just an annoying law onto themselves.
Exactly. But they never managed to beat the mighty DUFC that all conquering season.
It was also before my time Ian so it never really happened (ohh hang on, in that case WE never won the World Cup either did we lol).
Celtic did give us a player called Ronald Glavin though, does anybody on here remember him ?.
But you did not win the world cup. VAR clearly showed the ball did not cross the line.
No, but the Russian linesman had a pint of Barocca that day and was in an extremely good mood, and he said it DID cross the line. Simples!.
Ohh and don't forget some people were on the pitch, they thought it was all over... and the rest of course is history lol.
