I remember when David Ellery was miked up for the first time. He was a school master at Harrow and refereed like he taught, he blew for a foul against Tony Adams and proceeded to give him a talking to, Adams bent down to pull his socks up and Ellery said something like " stand up boy while I'm talking to you " upon which Adams stood virtually to attention. It was all picked up by the mike and replayed on numerous occasions.
There was a great story going around at about that time with one of the Barnsley referees. He gave what looked like a controversial decision and as the players stormed towards him, he put a finger to his lips to shush players and he made out he was ‘miked up’ Apparrently the players and coaches gave him hell after when they found out he wasn’t miked up.
