Just thinking, aside from Winnall when was the last time we had a player who scored more than 20 in a season (in recent times)? I think Chopra came close but I can't think of anyone who actually did...
Vaz Te would have probably done had he stopped with us. But there isn't anybody apart from Winnall in the past 20 years.
Hignett got 22 I think, but included the play off matches of 99/00. Before him, I think David Currie got 20 in 88/89 including Cup goals.
In all my years of watching Barnsley, only four players have scored 20 or more league goals in a season (Mick Butler, Brian Joicey, Ronnie Glavin & Sam Winnall).
Cant double check cos I'm at work , but I believe there s only 8 players who ve scored 50 goals or more for the reds . Winnall would have been no 9 if he d stopped a bit longer (49) .
We've never really had a player who consistently scored 20 - if we had a decent one we sold them. We've had some pretty decent centre backs but struggled with strikers
As always you are correct. Payton got 20 including 3 in the cup Currie got 20 in total including 4 in the cup Hignett 21 including play offs Redfearn and Dyer both 19 including cups 40 years between Joicey and Winnall as forwards scoring more than 20. Pretty surprising given the quality we had up from during those years.
And I believe he came second in the player of the year award. Most overlooked guy in the history of the award. No way should he not have won it. Our record since then shows how hard it is to score 20 in a season.
Well you're in for a treat Kev cos Thiam, Moore and Bradders all gonna score 20 league goals apiece this season for us
That’s actually a massive myth. I met him loads of times during his stay with us and he was a sound lad
I feel sure that David Hirst would have made it with his electric start with us, pity he was sold so quickly , what a player
