    Say if you were to book a 5 hour journey 6 weeks in advance, what would you be paying?

    Heavily depends on the route. East Coast mainline is usually reasonable, though some Scotland tickets are so much you'd be better off flying. You can hit it lucky though. East to West is usually incredibly and disproportionately expensive. London - Bristol is often £60-£80 one-way.

    Seriously, the answer depends on the start, the destination, the time of departure and arrival, and what routes are available. It is sometimes cheaper to buy tickets from A to C to B, where C is in the middle than A to B. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy tickets to D, where D is further away than B, and other times it just makes even less sense.

    Depends where you're going, bought two returns to Scarborough in prime holiday season for 40 quid, and I can go first class to Inverness for a hundred. Tried going to Exeter and they quoted 250.

    What kind of prices are people looking at or paying for Bristol City away? I guess that would be a good comparison as it must be a good 4hour journey?

    Bristol is a bit of a shitter. Last time I split tickets between Sheffield/derby, derby/Birmingham, Birmingham/Cheltenham, Cheltenham/Bristol. Still cost loads but cheaper than one ticket (was on the same train all the way as well)

    I've not lived in the UK for over 2 years now, and I have recently booked 2 long distance trains to Basel and Rotterdam, and I just wanted to see the difference in price really. Obviously not expecting the UK to be cheaper. Just interested.

    Wakefield to Kings Cross return is £250 at peak times, 2 hour trip.

    I was searching flights to Paphos yesterday, cheapest i saw, for July was something like £380 for 2 returns, shows the scandal of rail prices.

    Not a 5 hour journey but 4-6 weeks you can quite often go Donny to London for less than 30 quid. Cost me 23 last week.

    From where I live to Rotterdam, with 3 changes has cost me 24€ return. Basel was 56€ return with only one change. Both journey 5+ hours.

    Last time I went from Amsterdam to Rotterdam was by train, cost about 11€ I think. I try and watch Feyenoord 2 or 3 times a season, as my friend has a season ticket there, cracking atmosphere.
