Fully agree that he wasn't tops in skill or flair but im in the determination, effort, never say die club and for that he's up there...one of my others would be Redders same on skill etc but warra player... Ward, yes every day
TBH mate quite a few of his teammates b4 him. Macca, Evans. Banks. A bigger fan of Derek Parker. Then there's Redders. Hignett. Ward. Currie. Barnard. Trippier. Stuart Gray. Paul Futcher. De zeeuw. John Hendrie. Larry May. Mal Shotton. Pat Howard Winstanley. Off the top of my head.
That wasn't point I was making about him - explained this in the thread. Original post said he was second best player behind Ronnie Glavin - hence my comment - we've had many better players in my opinion.
The side with Aylot in I watched home n away. When Norman took over I would say was the best football I watched. Remember knocking 3 first division teams out of the cup Man city home 33k packed in I'm sure Aylot got the winner. Stood in the old brewery stand. Glavin was on a different level.
Aylott wasn't a natural goal scorer, but at his best got 15 a season which isn't bad. He brought other players into play probably better than any other forward we have had. Derrick Parker was the brains of the team up front though - our Bergkamp if you like. That team had so many match winners, more than any we have had before or since. If any team came and tried to out football us they lost every time. We did used to struggle a bit with the dour teams. I seem to remember a lot of rubbish games against Cambridge Utd at that time, they had a huge physical team, played drab football, a bit like the modern day Cardiff.
Enjoyed listening to that, Trev and Derrick Parker was a fantastic strike partnership with Glav an Banks behind them and Barrowclough to put the ball in. What a team.
I saw Tommy with Derrick Parker last year. I think it was in The Travellers at Dodworth (but memory plays tricks!.)
I remember Terry Venables saying we were the best footballing side in the league by a country mile. He cursed wendies for playing defensive football. But QPR ( the team he managed) were awful with the offside tactics. Got promoted though.
