Point would be that they are still my team & I'd still watch/support them regardless of division or form. I prefer this league because it is more competitive and much more interesting. Like Bluebird I didn't particularly enjoy our experience in the top flight. Apart from a couple of grounds I'd prefer to go to the ones in the championship. not saying we shouldn't try and win each game, just not lying awake at night dreaming of getting there. Once you get past Man Utd/City, Liverpool, Chelsea Arsenal & Spurs[?] there's not much there to get excited about. I hate what the PL has done to football in pretty much everything it has done. If I match the 2 leagues up on preference of games to watch: Man City - would like to see them for sure Man Utd or fowls - fowls Chelsea or Leeds - Leeds Spurs or Sheff Utd. - SUFC Liverpool or QPR - Liverpool Arsenal or Milwall - Arsenal Burnley or Bolton - meh Watford or Norwich - Norwich Brighton or Ipswich - Ipswich Huddersfield or Forest - close but probably HTFC, Newcastle or Sunderland - both good Liecester or Villa - Villa definately Bournmouth or Burton - Burton Southampton or Bristol - neither really but I'll go Bristol as it's closer Stoke or Preston - probably Stoke, but not much in it Everton or Hull - Everton West Brom or Birmingham - meh West Ham or Fulham - Fulham, fantastic away day Swansea or Cardiff - probably Cardiff just Palace or QPR/Brentford - meh
Serious question, would you rather travel to Bournemouth, Brighton, Burnley & Watford over Villa, Forest, Fulham & Middlesborough? Personally I wouldn't. It might be that I'm not a 'football' fan in the purest sense, more of a 'my team' fan. Other than Man City (this season) and Arsenal (some years back) there aren't any teams, other than Barnsley, that I would go out of my way to watch. There is nothing about watching Palace, Swansea insert any team that excites me anymore. #hatefootballlovebarnsley sums it up for me
In the spirit of reasoned debate I don't think anyone doesnt really want us to perform better and higher. It's just that a lot of us don't think we're s**t at present either, especially having seen where we were in the 60s and 70s. We have no divine right to be where we are never mind any higher.
Agree prices are ridiculous, even £30 to watch Man United. All of which feeds into my general dislike of football these days. Unfortunately I still love, and am addicted to, my team.
Err Yes - well except the Burnley/ Fulham example- but that because I live down here and they are all easy for me to get to Middleboro in particular and Forest and Villa not so easy for me. I know what you mean to an extent but we have to have ambition to get to the Prem - I cant say I would be devastated if we dont succeed but you have to try
What relevance does the 1960s have though? Most people weren't around and so it's long ago it might as well be the 1860s. 2003-17 have been far less successful than the 80s and 90s. I think people need to calm down a bit.
Thanks for the 1860s reference. I feel a lot better for that! I know my bones are creaking a bit but crikey. It's all perspective I guess but from my standpoint we're in our traditional home in terms of league and the team seems to be developing nicely. Reason for a little bit of optimism.
I would love us to be a fantastic, free flowing, exciting team that won almost every game and we should strive for that. I understand that as a consequence of being that team we would end up in the prem. All I'm saying is that 'being in the prem' isn't the end goal for me. would definitely take being an exciting team in the championship (as we are now) over being a Tony Pullis type team in the PL that survived year after year. For me, apart from the Glavin era & the year we won promotion to the PL, this last few years has been the best time I can remember for being a Reds fan. I enjoyed the year we came up from league 1 miles more than the year in the prem. I loved that we had a local chairman, coach & captain. I loved how together it all felt as fans and players. The novelty of being in the PL had worn off after about 6 games.
I agree with you, and I must admit with hindsight I am glad we got relegated to the 3rd Division - we had been doing a "Pulis" in the 2nd division for too long and with the exception of the great escape half season and the cup run it had been hard work to keep going. I got the enjoyment back when we started winning things even though it was at a lower level, and at the moment seem to be doing a lot better than just hanging on to our status - but you never stand still - we need to kick on rather than slide back, which would mean at some point getting to the playoffs and I wouldnt want us to lose if we got there
Never want us to lose, and it's not like I would stop going because we were in the prem. I'd love to be in the Prem if we were competitive but still did things the way we do now (developing young talent), However, we both know that after a couple of games the clamour would be for us to be spending zillions on players, sacking the manager, etc.. I think I'm just an old reactionary now. I like things as they are. We have a great (local) coach, who tries to pay attacking football. I like that we defy the odds time & time again. I can feel an affinity building between the fans and the players again (a la Hourihane, Scowen, etc.). Actually think this lot will be better, given a couple of years.
Back to Original topic I was perusing their board and saw this Funny as I bet I speak for most Barnsley fans when I say "Will never forget Odejayis miss against them at Wembley in the semis" I cant really picture their goal - but I can still see Kayode putting it past the keeper and the post as if it was yesterday
Supporters shouldn't let the affinity build too much. If we get an offer for a player that turns the owner's head then they could be off in January.
