Just of at a slight tangent following the signings this week, just wondered what people's thoughts are on what they feel have been the best value signings we've made in the years watching Barnsley. Obviously can't include free transfers, and I'm looking at this from the impact they had on Barnsley and not particularly about making an onward profit.

First three names that came to my mind were Glavin, Redfearn, De Zeeuw.

Redfearn we bought for 250k and flogged for a million. But I get the point. I'm going for Allan Clarke. Completely changed the club. de Zeeuw of course. Martin Bullock and Sheridan. So many unsung sung heroes.

Paul Futcher too. Not sure what we paid. Wasn't he part of a double signing (Was the other Calvin Plummer)?

Neil Thompson, Darren Sheridan and signing super John was an inspired move.

I have 30+ years of watching Barnsley, but a recent example has to be season before last when Kevin Long (admittedly, a loanee) came and firmed up our defence as Adam Hammill came back to ignite our attack and turned the worst first half of a season into the best second half of a season that I can remember.

Clarke is a great call. My dad, long since lost from football, said the club literally changed overnight when he arrived. And initiated all that followed.

It did. It went from a pace of despair to hope. He forged the modern Barnsley it was such a change.

Aye Calvin Plummer , lightning fast .
Once at home he ran from our D to their D like an Olympic sprinter in a split second but no idea what to do when he got there .

He is right - it did. The buzz of excitement around the place was incredible. A recent England international coming to play for us in the Fourth Division was just surreal. Although it was £55,000 well spent I still can't understand why Leeds didn't just release him with their blessing seeing as he was taking his first job in management. Mean decision to ask for a substantial fee.

Yes, boardroom changes too that supported Clarke. We just sold anybody half decent under Iley.

The Machin era, and the Premier League finished him off. Just fell out of love with the game. That said, I've lost count of the hours he's spent watching my son play on Sundays, taking him training etc.

The momentum we got from it took us up two divisions and it seemed anything was possible. Particularly when it culminated in Norman's side.

For me it's the greed and the money. The distance between fans and players. In the good old bad old days they didn't seem so removed. Now it seems to have lost summat for me. Probably just an old git.

It's a great shame that we didn't build on the Clarke and Hunter promotions by getting into the top flight when it was more of a level playing field.

Oakwell capable of 30k crowds and thousands flocking to the away games.

Could have changed our path completely.

That Hunter side was so close. The best I've ever seen. Such beautiful football.

Yep, two generations thinking "what if". I was 5, maybe 6 when I started going to games with my dad and grandad. Remember away games sounding like home games, huge support.

It was a golden era and grabbed everyone's imagination. Not just reds fans either. My mate worked at Ferrybridge power station back then and the talk at work was all about our cup run etc. Blokes from as far away as Goole and Selby had jumped on the bandwagon.
