I think the board would be willing to go close to 10k/week for the right player (think Hourihane). For reference, 10k/week is around half a mil per year. Off the top of my head, Hammill is our current highest earner at 4k/week.
What would you guys reckon Stevie Mallan would have been offered per week? St Mirren's very top earner would, at a guess, be on no more than £1000 per week. Even then, it would likely be one or two guys tops - like in 2013 when we won the Scottish League Cup with Gary Teale and club legend Steven Thompson in the team. Mallan was probably on thruppence ha'penny and a half-chewed packet of Hubba Bubba.
One website I was on recently reckoned St Mirren's average was around £1.5k per week. That's a lot of dosh for someone his age if of course he was on top whack. Celtic paid most on circa £17k, Aberdeen £3k, Hibs and Dundee £2k, Motherwell £1.3k, Hearts £1.2k and Inverness CT £1k per week. I haven't seen anything to verify these numbers, they were on a link I saw for Scottish teams salaries when it was first rumoured we were going to sign him.
Steven Thompson would maybe have been on £1500 per week with St Mirren. He signed because he is a supporter, a local lad, and stood on the terraces at Hampden in 1987 when we won the Scottish Cup. Hard to say these days what we actually pay. The players had relegation clauses that would see their wages drop should we be relegated - which we were. On the subject of finance in Scottish football - Inverness CT have just been relegated. Dundee United face Hamilton in the playoff. Should United lose, there are strong rumours up here that both Dundee United and Inverness could be staring at administration.... watch this space.
