I wouldn't want Wigan to disappear, but I think there needs to be a bit more realism from some of their fans ( judging by the comments on their forum), the reality is they were bankrolled by Whelan into a position above what the actual fan base could sustain without DW's money....but that's OK, local bloke spending his own money on his hometown club, rather like PC with us...the difference is the way the club has been run since then...a wage bill they can't afford will not be sustainable...and **** happens....even more so when they are unfortunate enough to be taken over by the dodgiest of owners. What is clear is that the EFL 'fit and proper test'....is not in itself fit for purpose, and until that happens clubs across the country are in danger.
I think Burton Albion also went too high as did Doncaster Rovers. Rushden and Diamonds went bust. Some of these clubs will never be bigger than what they are due to a few factors. Not always financial. Burton have Derby, Leicester and Stoke to contend with and starting out as non-league they probably won't gain many more. Doncaster have Rotherham, Scunthorpe and Grimsby Town.
You are right. They are just really pissing me off TBH and I was a bit over the top with my vitriol (not the emo band).
More I think about it, the administrators are just pulling one costly publicity stunt, to highlight poor Wigan and try to gain sympathy locally, nationally and internationally. There’s no reasonable argument to their predicament, it was self inflicted administration by their owners at that time. The only thing that worries me, is if there’s some kind of anomaly in the paperwork between the clubs and the EFL, that extended the season and they are trying to exploit a technicality to push the points deduction into 20/21 season. But all clubs will have signed that documentation, it’s not for public consumption so I’m not privi to that information, but I’m sure our clubs lawyers have gone through the paperwork and must be satisfied there’s little to worry over.
I’m sure they will have tbh. If there’s something about how we’ve continued the season as grounds to not give Wigan the points deduction then I’m sure the relegated clubs have similar arguments to not be relegated .
Wigan aren’t a football town anyway , the RL club dominates , a bit like Wakefield and Trinity . The only reason they went to the Prem and FA Cup final was Whelan who spent a fortune getting them there and they’ve carried on in that way but the new guys haven’t had the cash to back it up . Unlike Cryne who spent in comparative terms , sod all, but ran the club prudently
Not a dissimilar situation on the face of it. The writing was on the wall for Rushden & Diamonds as soon as Griggs stopped funding them, it just took a few years for the chickens to come home to roost.
Thing is when this goes to court, we don’t know what Wigan’s actual argument is, until it’s presented. We are guessing, we all know taking the full circumstances into consideration, there isn’t a defence, but in the court, what do the officials actually take into account. The whole argument could be hinged under 1 technicality we are unaware of. It’s doubtful and in any event, should that happen the EFL will be held accountable and cue many claims.
It’s my guess that this is why our board have asked to be present or be represented in some way. They rightly think imo that the EFL won’t put forward the alternative situations if Wigan’s case is upheld .
If they do win the appeal on a technicality then down we go. Us going to court would be very unlikely to succeed imo, as long as the EFL have followed their own procedures correctly. That being said I honestly cant see Wigan winning
I've said it before the EFL have a massive get out of jail free card here. If they ditch relegation before the fixtures are announced. It would be harsh on Norwich, Bournemouth and Watford as they were Premier League clubs but if Wigan's relegation is overturned they are going to have to consider it due to the legal action that would follow. Not just from us. I think other clubs would get involved such as Peterborough, Tranmere etc. Potential massive can of worms.
If they do win. They wont relegate us. Not worried in the slightest. What ever happens...happens. I'm confident, we will be miles ahead of Wigan in the next 3 years anyway.
It’s all a guessing game so I’m guessing our argument if the points deduction is overturned , is that the EFL hasn’t applied it’s rules on FFP fairly and it’s sanctions haven’t been proportionate which has led to an unfair advantage to some teams , particularly this season
Happy to serve punishment in the Championship but not in League 1. If that isn't an admission I don't know what is.
Yes I know. And down we'd go. But it is black and white that admin = 12 point deduction so I'm confident their appeal will be thrown out
