Thinking of doing a real ale sesh in Wombwell. Someone today mentioned that there was the "Big George" and "Little George", he said that the big one wasn't far from train station. Looking on google maps I only found one called the George and from where it's located (not too far from Horseshoe) and what I was told, I guess that is the little one. Got those 2 (if someone can help with where the "big George" is), Horseshoe, Old Town Hall and Anglers Rest.
"sir" george & cricket club is just up from train station, fair walk into w'well town centre, little george is up a little 1 way street opposite horseshoe, which is next to post office owd tarn hall, is on corner of station rd opposite prince o wales & squires anglers is 2 min walk pass cop shop heading towards brampton, not been in for years. also alma,,butchers, lockys & kg's all close together, there used to be the oak, which could get busy late on but that got shut down, mainly because after a pint in all the others folk put their boxing gloves on. you said a "real" ale sesh, does that mean a nice pint or plenty o pints? you're laughing if its the latter with a box of fat dressed as a kebab, if w'well high st was 2 mins off a sunny coast, it probably would resemble the punta ballena
If you want a real ale sesh, don't go out round wombwell. Unless your idea of real ale is John Smith Smooth. Go to Kelham Island instead
As others have said, Wombwell is no real ale Mecca. If still undeterred, you have correctly identified the pubs serving real ale in some form. The train station is a fair yomp from most of the pubs. Come out of the station and turn left up the smaller of the two hills you're faced with. Cricket club on left, 100yds on Sir George's Arms on right. I've not been in for 10 years but at that time it was still 60 years more recently than anyone had been in with a paintbrush! Old school boozer and no mistake. It is then a long (1 mile ish) downhill walk to all the other pubs. I would definitely consider getting the bus back into town from outside Anglers or across road from Horseshoe.
Cheers. I realise it's no mecca but probably enough pubs to have a decent afternoon - and if all else fails there's the Horseshoe and Anglers which will give a decent selection. I checked Sir George out and looks like no cask there. Barley Sheaf looks ok if still open, Camra website says Acorn on. Also is Thawley's still open - recall going in there a few years back after an Acorn Brewery tour and it was a decent little pub. A day rider for the bus might be an idea and include the Church House in Wath and The Junction. Also could then stop off at the Ash on the way home.
You are on the road to oblivion Sir George's is not the pub it used to be. The Anglers rest used to be my old stomping ground. Small and pokey nowadays give a miss. All the tourists do the town centre. Lockey,s at lights, weather spoons, old Horse shoe,Prince of Wales on high st, you will run out of time if you travel to more if there are any as most have gone. Railway station way off track. Get bus to high st and taxi back
It's for pleasure, yes I am well aware that there are many other places to go that would be better. Partly a nostalgia thing as my mate used to work in wombwell many years ago.
w'well to waff in pubs is like comparing barca to barnet in football, also spoons in waff is more expensive than shoe, the junk is more of a restaurant come pub now. not bad snap in ash last time i went. you can have a decent time in w'well, all pubs within a cig walking distance, but advise bottles in a few
Don't smoke and don't do bottles in pubs! Actually heard on good authority that the Church House is one of the best Wetherspoons in the area.
Was in Horseshoe (Weatherspoons) last week, it had about 4/5 good beers on tap, rest of pubs in Wombwell a bit meh. The Rock and George n Dragon up Wentworth are worth a shout.
For a decent real ale session go to Elsecar, there's 4 decent pubs who all have 3 or 4 real ales on - Fitz, Crown, Milton and Market. Nice village too
The Market has really gone down hill. It's grubby and the landlord is a Sheff Utd fan, which in itself I don't mind but when he has Sheff Utd flags up in a pub that is in the boundary of Barnsley it's taking the piss. I now see why it lost it's place in the Good Beer Guide. Anyway, we're going to Sheffield instead! I need cheering up, I don't need my mate moaning at just about every pub we go in!
They're all much of a muchness I think. Could have gone to the BlueBell Inn in Manvers though, it's a Marstons pub so plenty of real ale and the rotisserie chickend aren't bad either.
i go in shoe & church regular, both fine, prefer the shoe as it seems a better atmosphere but r'lass prefers to eat in church, and can't argue if she's driving ;-)
