depends if you want them to lose their remaining seats or not. The best idea is for Labour and LibDems to elect leaders that can work together and with Plaid the SNP and Greens and stand on a single left ticket in all seats with a commitment to change the voting system and move parliament to the north and if Boris has stopped them agree to leave Scottish independence completely with Holyrood.
To be honest, you could have put anything in the Labour Manifesto. Nobody would have read it because all they voted for was Brexit - LEAVE MEANS LEAVE GET BREXIT DONE SEND THEM BACK. That's the only thing people have voted for basically. Apart from that bloke who was obsessed with the tree planting.
I think you are over thinking this. Brexit was undoubtedly a major issue in the result. Labour promised more of the dithering that has brought Parliament and the country to a standstill. Most people are sick and tired of it, and voted for someone who at least promised to do something positive, rather than more if the same. But this was on top of Labour having a leader who was disliked by many, not least amongst his own MPs. The left of the Labour party loved him, but nobody else did. and They put forward a manifesto that was 40 years out of date advocating policies only the extreme left thought were good ideas. and Advocated taxation changes that were aimed at the rich to placate their left wing followers, yet threatened most of the middle ground in the UK. In short, they did about as much as they possibly could to make Labour unelectable. Coming from a staunch labour background I can say the above with great sadness. However, unlike Tony Blair, they placated a minority view in the country, to follow a strong faction in their own party, and simply moved away from the rest of the majority of the people in rhe country. Very, very sad as we now have an impotent and divided opposition at a time when we need a strong one. Labour needs to reinvent itself and adopt a degree of realism rather than idealism and leftist dogma that is no longer supported by the majority within the country. I fully expect this email to suffer from the usual slating from the staunch labour supporters on here, but speaking from a position where my heart says vote my labour, but my head says otherwise, I think I am not too of the mark in this post.
Brexit has been the biggest political subject since the 75 referendum, nothing, as far as i know has engaged as many of the voters, to seemingly ignore the result and gamble on safe majorities has been a disaster, labour IMO were never going to win this election but the sheer scale of the defeat not only puts brexit and the referendum up in lights for all to see , it also makes another 10 years of tory rule far more likely than McCluskey's comments. Not only did the working class voters feel that they were being ignored they also felt that they were being patronised, they have been branded racist, ignorant, thick and unable to make a decision on the future of the union even tho they pay their taxes that wind up paying for it, the tories campaigned on the back of getting brexit done, honouring the referendum and it worked, no second peoples vote that in reality is nothing more than a effort to stop brexit in its entirity,..... So in response to your suggestion that its the remainers fault again, well, in my opinion it is , the remainers , not only in the labour party but in the green party and the lib dems aswell gave the tories one hell of a boost and the nature of our first past the post system ensured a victory for them most of the public never ever read a manifesto,in fact i bet millions have never seen one and labours last ditched efforts of things like free broadband, a four day week etc simply did not cut through the outstanding issue of brexit, rightly or wrongly this was the reality labour was facing.
And it was the same McCluskey who conspired with others to pick the wrong Miliband, enthrone Corbyn, did nothing to support the case for remaining in the EU etc. As a lifelong Labour voter, who this time only voted Labour as a tactical vote (which failed), I am praying that we can get back to being a sensible centre-left party that has some chance of actually protecting and enhancing the lives of the people it is supposed to represent.
The problem is not simple to fix. For sure Boris’s get Brexit Done was a far better vote winner than Labours We will do some more negotiating and then put it to a second referendum stance. Even though get Brexit done is a lie we will come out on 31 Jan and many people will think that’s the box ticked even though it’s a long way from it. On this topic I don’t know what labour could have done though if they came out as hard Brexit they looked stupid for voting down the previous deals even though they weren’t ones that were in line with their views. If they had backed remain hard they would still have lost the seats in the north they may had nicked a few Lib Dem seats and possibly Tory seats but no where near enough. But for me the fundamental problem is Corbyn Leadership. He isn’t a natural leader in the way Blair was or even someone like Cameron on Thatcher Labour needs someone to communicate a vision and they just didn’t do that this election Boris did or rather Cummings did
You can absolutely guarantee that they *will* find a way to blame Labour for everything they screw up in the next 5 years. Nailed on.
Possibly - it’s obvious reading this board / facebook / the election results that many actually believe that Labour are to blame for us still being in the EU. No matter how many times that belief is challenged with simple facts, some people will choose to believe it. what’s that old saying about a lie getting around the world quicker than the truth can get its act together? johnsin and Cummings are excellent at this, I’m not sure it’s within the DNA of the Labour Party to compete.
A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on. Winston Churchill
And the crazy thing was that under the Fixed Term Parliament Act the Conservatives couldn't muster enough votes to trigger an election.
jeeez get real, Labour lost for a few reasons, not just Brexit, not least the fact that vast swathes of the country couldn't stand Corbyn, who didn't help himself by seemingly promising something new every time he opened his mouth, there was so much nobody could concentrate on anything and the more he came out with it seemed more and more unfundable
Interview with said Ms Flint this morning . Scathing of corbyn , but also the Kier starmer / Yvette Cooper brigade for the 2nd referendum position . One interesting note she brought up , 40% of londoners voted brexit and as she noted mainly working class voters . On reflection labour chased the wrong demographic and paid the price ......
I reckon he'd be good on the left. He could cut inside and hammer the ball into the top corner, like the legend that is Adam Hammill. My God I miss that bloke.
