Great idea but the establishment and monarchists wouldn't let it happen.

Quite happy if we used Jerusalem tbh. Lots of other sports use it to represent England.
    Or Sex on fire. :)

God save the king is not specific to England so why do we hang on to it in football when its meaningless to most.
"God Save the King" is the national anthem of the United Kingdom and the British Crown Dependencies, one of two national anthems of New Zealand since 1977, and the royal anthem of most Commonwealth realms.

Better tune I agree but its about England. Until all the other countries in the union bog off to lead rose-tinted, sunny upland lives we need one about Britannia/Uk.

Sorry mate I may misunderstand your post. But i thought it was meant to be about England.
    Eg
    England Rugby league use it.
England at the commonwealth games use it.
    Cricket has used it.

It's 2023. At the last census the majority of people in England and Wales declared that they were not Christian with well over a third of people saying they had no religion at all which is a figure that rises significantly in the under 40s. Our national anthem shouldn't make any reference to god, it's outdated and an insult to the intelligence of the population.

For that reason god save the Queen, Jerusalem, land of hope and glory and pretty much all the old religious clap trap shouldn't even be considered.

Aye Jerusalem is a good tune but when it has 'Englands green and pleasant land' in it its not quite appropriate for all corners of UK. That's what I meant

But it’s only for your corner of the uk.
Certainly not appropriate for the Scottish, Welsh or N Irish corners.

    YMA O HYD

The unofficial Welsh Anthem - translation below. Written by Dafydd Iwan who was imprisoned for his protest about the status of the Welsh language.

The message is that despite oppression (from the English!) and despite Thatcher (see verse 5) Wales, the Welsh language an culture survive and flourish. The Anthem is a very powerful and emotional - watch it on YouTube.

(The official Welsh Anthem - Land of my Fathers has a similar message but is more restrained.)

    STILL HERE
    You don't remember Macsen,1
    nobody knows him.
One thousand and six hundred years,
a time too long to remember.
    When Magnus Maximus2 left Wales,
    in the year 383,
    leaving us a whole nation,
and today - look at us!

    We are still here,
    we are still here,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything.
    We are still here,
    we are still here,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything.
    We are still here.

Let the wind blow from the East,3
let the storm roar from the sea,
let the lightning split the heavens,
    and the thunder shout "encore!"
Let the tears of the faint-hearted flow,
and the servile lick the floor.
    Despite the blackness around us,
we are ready for the breaking of the dawn!

    We are still here,
    we are still here,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything.
    We are still here,
    we are still here,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything.
    We are still here.

We remember that Macsen the Emperor
left our country in one whole piece.
And we shall shout before the nations,
"We'll be here until Judgement Day!"
    Despite every Dic Siôn Dafydd,4
despite old Maggie5 and her crew,
we'll be here until the end of time,
and the Welsh language will be alive!

    We are still here,
    we are still here,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything.
    We are still here,
    we are still here,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything.
    We are still here,
    we are still here,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything.
    We are still here,
    we are still here,
in spite of everyone and everything,
in spite of everyone and everything...

Like I posted earlier, totally new anthem required that’s representative of all citizens and that they can be proud to sing it, also not be shamed if they choose not to sing it

Could do worse than 'You'll Never Walk Alone '. Uplifting, non-political, emotional. Even reds fans sang it, notably when we went up to Prem. Have to buy the rights to it though I would think.

But it’s associated with Liverpool FC, Folk who especially don’t like them will not be happy. Forget what’s already out there, I repeat, something new

All down to taste of course, but I don't get the attraction for this...Land of My Fathers and Sosban Fach are light years better. My old man had a radiogram cabinet full of Welsh male voice choirs with some fantastic tunes in them, I don't think this would have broken into the top 40.

You'd have to pay the estates of that famous Liverpudlian song writing team of Rodgers and Hammerstein for the privilege I would think.
