God save the king is not specific to England so why do we hang on to it in football when its meaningless to most.

It's 2023. At the last census the majority of people in England and Wales declared that they were not Christian with well over a third of people saying they had no religion at all which is a figure that rises significantly in the under 40s. Our national anthem shouldn't make any reference to god, it's outdated and an insult to the intelligence of the population.

For that reason god save the Queen, Jerusalem, land of hope and glory and pretty much all the old religious clap trap shouldn't even be considered.

 

Aye Jerusalem is a good tune but when it has 'Englands green and pleasant land' in it its not quite appropriate for all corners of UK. That's what I meant

 

But it’s only for your corner of the uk.
Certainly not appropriate for the Scottish, Welsh or N Irish corners.

Like I posted earlier, totally new anthem required that’s representative of all citizens and that they can be proud to sing it, also not be shamed if they choose not to sing it

 

Could do worse than 'You'll Never Walk Alone '. Uplifting, non-political, emotional. Even reds fans sang it, notably when we went up to Prem. Have to buy the rights to it though I would think.

 

But it’s associated with Liverpool FC, Folk who especially don’t like them will not be happy. Forget what’s already out there, I repeat,something new

All down to taste of course, but I don't get the attraction for this...Land of My Fathers and Sosban Fach are light years better. My old man had a radiogram cabinet full of Welsh male voice choirs with some fantastic tunes in them, I don't think this would have broken into the top 40.

 

You'd have to pay the estates of that famous Liverpudlian song writing team of Rodgers and Hammerstein for the privilege I would think.
