Attempting to right the wrongs of the 80’s when they closed the much larger and busier Masborough station in favour of the current one in the town centre. The issue being the current station isn’t on the mainline and only has a single line access at one end which limits the services that can call there. All the mainline services bypass the station so they’re left with just local stopping services. With just one service to Leeds an hour, taking about an hour on average, it really is a poor service for a town the size of Rotherham.

The platforms at Masborough are still there but the tram train isn’t close enough to integrate the two - hence spending a ridiculous amount on a new station not that far away.

If they do open the new station they’re hoping some of the Cross Country and Transpenine Express services will call there, which will give the town rail services Barnsley could only dream of - obviously a big part of that is because of the topography of Barnsley.

Having at least 4 pubs and a decent chippy within 200 yards of each other was always good. Have a good drink in Hoyland, fish and chips on the way down to Elsecar and pop into the Birdcage trying to look sober to get past Dennis

IIRC Rotherham, Barnsley and Huddersfield are among the largest towns in the country without a direct train service to London.

Is new station going to be on the Mainline then? If it is it will still be a fair trek from town centre because nearest Junction is at Rawmarsh. I'd re-open Masbrough but it doesn't help being in a delapidated 5hi t hole :D.

TBF we did have one for a few years in the 2000’s but it didn’t last. There was only a handful of services each day and they were slow. It was still quicker to get off in Sheff and swap to a faster service. Apparently there’s little demand for a Barnsley to London service, although I guess that’s measured by people that currently purchase Barnsley - London tickets. I travel to London every other week for work but I drive and park at Wakefield Westgate.

I believe Huddersfield was due to get a direct LNER service but I’ve no idea what’s happening with that.

As an aside. Will the new service to York via Castleford see the end of the service via Moorthorpe and Pontefract?

Cas is just like Rotherham. A Wetherspoon and couple of pubs.

The plan is for it to be built on land off Forge Way. So this station will be much closer to Parkgate. The mainline runs along one side of the site and the tram train runs along the other.

No. The recently added Man - York via Kirkgate and Castleford is technically to keep services moving during the Transpenine Route Upgrade. It looks like more services are being added from December though which is a winner because it makes getting to York from Barnsley much quicker and easier if the connection lines up nicely at Kirkgate.

I believe the intention is to keep the service after the TPU is complete, but Northern will be the operator, not TPE.

The service via Moorthorpe and Pontefract has been running for years but it’s severely limited. It might only exist to mostly retain route knowledge, but I don’t think there are plans to scrap it.

It's a shame what happened to Pontefract Baghill.

You can blame the Selby Diversion for that. It meant Sheff to York services could have an additional stop at Doncaster and then speed up the ECML to York without making the journey any slower than it was via the Dearne Valley Line. An extra stop in a busy place = more revenue!

That Selby Diversion also contributed to the closure of the NMM at Cudworth and Royston.

Going way off topic so sorry if people aren’t interested.
