Attempting to right the wrongs of the 80’s when they closed the much larger and busier Masborough station in favour of the current one in the town centre. The issue being the current station isn’t on the mainline and only has a single line access at one end which limits the services that can call there. All the mainline services bypass the station so they’re left with just local stopping services. With just one service to Leeds an hour, taking about an hour on average, it really is a poor service for a town the size of Rotherham.

The platforms at Masborough are still there but the tram train isn’t close enough to integrate the two - hence spending a ridiculous amount on a new station not that far away.

If they do open the new station they’re hoping some of the Cross Country and Transpenine Express services will call there, which will give the town rail services Barnsley could only dream of - obviously a big part of that is because of the topography of Barnsley.
