    I conducted some extensive research ( well googled it) and found the following

    It is unclear what kind of creature the character represents; while Bungle is a bear and George a hippopotamus, Zippy bears no obvious resemblance to any real animal. Presenter Geoffrey Hayes has said of him, "I don't think anyone has a clue what he's meant to be."

    and more interestingly
    It is revealed that Zippy was made orange because the director of Rainbow was a supporter of Dunde United team.

    wonder if that fact is know to @arabian_ian
