I think Chesterfield had a poor finish to the end of the season you're thinking of. They came 3rd on 84 points but were beaten in the Play-offs on penalties by Notts County who finished 2nd on 107 points. Notts County did need extra time though to beat Boreham Wood in the Semi's, who finished 35 points behind them in the league.
What Oldham fans are saying... Yoganathan is outstanding, sets the tempo both on and off the ball. Yoganathan had to start. He has shown how difficult it is for other teams to work him out. Some (Pett, Yoganathan, Pritchard) have been excellent calibre signings, given the circumstances He can't leave out Yoganathan, that boy's the threat we've needed since we lost Stones. Vimal Yoganathan — Like a piston engine runnin’ on pure fire. That lad don’t just play football… he commands it. Yoganathan is a star, people moaning about that signing need putting up against a wall Yoganathan runs at the defence with the ball - he did this a number of times on Wednesday (the ball did seem to get a little stuck under his feet but that may have been down to the longer grass). The boards were full of grumbling at how we were doing a favour for Barnsley by having Yoganathan here Yoganathan, the NL Cole Palmer. Yoganathan looks like a real talent. 19 years old! A real shame Barnsley signed him on a 3 1/2 deal....cannot imagine there is any way we can keep him beyond this season.
Is your English your first language? Just pulling your leg by the way, never heard us called ‘ barno’ before. Do you say Penners for penalties as well
I agree that it doesn't seem quite right, particularly when there is such a big points gap, but York were the beneficiaries of such a system when they were promoted from the National League North a couple of years ago.
If Man utd win the piss pot Europa league trophy tonight. They automatically go in to the Champions league next season, yet could finish 1 place above the relegation places in the Premier.
We benefitted in 2016, finishing below Walsall and then thrashing them twice in the semi. I just don’t agree with the system at all. It’s a money making exercise.
I prefer it tbh. Keeps clubs interested that are in shouting distance till the end. We were without a doubt the form team going into the play offs. And those 2 semis and final for our fans were fantastic matches. Our momentum kept us going to the season end. Or we'd have given up hope months before. No way would we have got automatic. One of the most dramatic rises (if not the most) of any club ever, given we were bottom in December. This last season.Walsall won none of their previous 13 games prior to the last one. Walking the league in Feb. Bradford winning in the 96th minute in their last game. Pipping Walsall for that last automatic spot. Would prefer Wimbledon to win the final against em. For selfish reasons. Not been to the new plough lane. And hopefully another London weekend.
Later end of league season would be boring for most teams if not for play offs. Everyone knows where they stand before season kicks off and that the playoffs exist
I quite agree mate. We finished 6th in Division 2 in 1982, I reckon we'd have been promoted if the playoffs had existed then.
Battle of the failures, the playoffs we all know the rules before the start it's great for keeping the season alive but totally unfair.
To a large degree you are certainly right that it is a money-making exercise, though the money mostly ends up, one way or another, in the pockets of players and agents. However, the play-offs system also produces far more meaningful matches at the latter end of the season and maintains interest a lot longer for a lot of fans.
