Oddly enough I think The Keel was where I had my last pint of BB. Is the pub still going? Can’t think for a second it is…
First pint was in doorway “hatch” at Rose n Crown (Pig) on Mount Vernon road , I was 15 I think, no longer a pub I am afraid
Does anybody actually know a bloke called John Smith ? lol. I knew a Jimmy Smith some years ago, and he wasn't bitter at all, he was a right silly giggle.
Delighted to read it's still going. Folk need to reclaim their evenings away from the telly and frequent our pubs more often. There's too much nostalgia recalled about what things "used to be like" at the expense of very few new memories being created. Nobody ever remembered a banging night spent in the house downing a bottle of Blossom Hill to accompany the takeaway kebab whilst lapping up 3 episodes of Clarkson's Farm. That's what we're heading towards.
It really is a shame that the social aspect is being lost...until fairly recently I've been a pub regular for nearly 50 years, in that time I got to know First and 2nd war veterans, men and women who had been involved in, and done some incredible things, also people who've travelled the world, people who've played all kinds of sport and music, or followed all kinds of politics and hobbies, done high powered jobs or important but sometimes mundane or unrecognised jobs, criminals and barristers, poets, experts on obscure subjects, people of all age groups and social strata...been a few k**heads on the way too but I wouldn't have missed out on a minute of it.
Yes, in a derelict state. Someone started doing something with it a few years ago (probably an HMO), but nowt seems to have happened for a good while now - likely waiting for it to conveniently burn down.
Fabulous post. Thank you. It's what I wanted to articulate. I'm not a conspiracy theorist in any way, but I can't help feel that pubs and clubs are frowned upon in some way as subversive to the wishes of those who wish to rule use. They've been in decline for years due to policies imposed by multiple governments of all colours. Who wants a mass congregation of individuals when they could be sat at home watching Netflix and yamming down Dominos and tins of lager? It's worth mentioning also the role they played in supporting striking miners. Who else would have stepped in back then?
1st drink was int Mount...well underage and wouldn't get served on matchday but could get served in the back room if we only ordered half's.
