The jumbled word thing only really works with normal sentences rather than individual words. There's no clear agreement on how our brains actually process reading though - just a bunch of theories. Well, on the face of it, that would seem to be the problem as I am often "not sober" However, having seen Mr.Donovan at close quarters, I'm not sure if he was in full control of his faculties either!
