I was going to start a similar thread then saw this one. I think its "shaping up". At the time of writing we still have no natural sided right midfielders/wingers or any cover at centre half and left back. I might even argue no one as good as George Williams at right back but we are getting there. Compare our current squad to the one who last played in the championship in 2013/14 (not listed everyone as we had about 50 players turn out that season) GK: Steele, Butland RB McLauglin, Wiseman, Hassell CB: Cranie, MVoto, Ramage, Nyatanga LB: Kennedy RM O Brien, Etuhu, CM: Dawson, Mellis, Cywka, Lawrence, Perkins LM Jennings, McCourt ST, O Grady, Pederson, Proschwitz, Rose
This summer we have signed guys like Bradshaw and Moncur and we all know what they are capable of from the form they showed last season. Back in the summer of 1996 when we signed a few unknown foreigners we had no idea how well they would turn out to be. Therefore 'on paper' the squad as of now looks better than the squad did in the summer before our promotion to the premiership. I'd say the current squad isn't better than that team (obviously) but then we know what those lads achieved and haven't had the chance to see our current on paper squad attempt the same.
If the Jinty and Kent deals go through, then priorities I think are; Left Back and Centre Back. After that it's just a case of bolstering in areas where we may be weak if there's an injury.
Without getting "carried away", it's fair to say that our team that lined up against Millwall at Wembley would destroy our 2014 side. A lot of people are wary about the loss of Brownhill, and potential losses of Fletcher and Isgrove. While I would love to see Fletcher and / or Isgrove come back to us, in my opinion they are not irreplaceable. We have an excellent system, in which players can slot in and out, very like our 96-97 side. Our spine is extremely solid, starting with the centre backs, with Conor being the lynchpin in midfield. If we cannot get Fletcher and Isgrove back, I am confident that come August we will have players in their place who fulfill similar roles - Caentepeel, for example, in place of Isgrove. I also think that if we don't resign Fletcher, we may well try to get someone similar in on loan. Had Mawson or Roberts left, I'd have been genuinely worried about how we could have replaced them. As it is, I'm absolutely confident that we'll have a first XI that can compete with anyone next season, and a squad more than decent enough to make sure that we'll be nowhere near the relegation places come next May.
I don't know what your issue is. Hecky has said a few times that the squad isn't finished & we need at least 4 new players. If he was saying 'we're good to go with what we have' then I could understand this post
