RE: Since the death sentence was abolished

How many have been released who haven't murdered again?

I take the point about the errors that have and undoubtedly will still occur, due to human frailties, when incorrect convictions are made.
To allow for this possibility, I believe that all incidents where a life is taken, on a one off basis, either by accident or as the french say "a crime passionelle" should be treated as man slaughter and as such should not carry a Life Sentence or a Death Penalty.
However, where multiple deaths are concerned (except in the case of Road Accidents or similar) or for repeat offenders, then I do believe that the Death Penalty should be invoked.

Something has to be done though .......

You can't have a situation where someone who rapes and murders a young child is allowed back on the streets to re-offend. If the death penalty is not reinstated, then I agree that 'Life' has got to mean 'Rest of Life' - Can you imagine what the parents of Jamie Bulger go through each day knowing their sons killers are walking around living a new life paid for by THEIR taxes ?

Why should murderers be allowed to exist in prison where they have access to TV's, DVD's, gym's and be able to complete college courses in Physicology ? - prison has got to about punishment for people such as these, the deterrent comes with the fact that as they are locked up they can't do the same thing to someone else.

We seem to spend so much time considering the rights of criminals in this day and age and give no thought to those of the victim and their families who have to live with the aftermath

I think it is unlikely that those sort of cases will be repeated but there will always be the exceptions and I take your point. However, I still believe that in certain cases, the Death Penalty should be an option.

In which case the sentences should be longer

Could you also post number of convicted murderers that have been released and not reoffended for comparison please

    It is a pointless discussion

As we CANNOT reintroduce the death penalty.

We are signed up to international agreements both with the UN and the EU.

Under EU law we cannot have the death penalty.

EU law... would that be the one where the other two EU super powers ignore the bits that dont suit them?
