But thousands watch test cricket and they must be make a fortune from 7 sold out home tests a year.

 

Agreed they have tried to have their cake and eat it. I guess more money exists in the one day formats though.

 

Test Match Cricket is the backbone of the sport, its the hardest format to play and every other format feeds off it , therefore they should support it because without Test Match Cricket the one day game would become insignificant. I love all formats of the sport and don't understand why we can't be successful at T20, ODi and Test Cricket . When we become rubbish at one format we always blame the other.
We need to get Cricket back into state schools, it could be 5 a side, 6 a side etc, even indoor touch and run . Get the kids involved early and they'll be hooked.

 

The ECB are doing some fantastic stuff with All Stars Cricket for the youngsters.

 

They must lose money at county level over a 5 day match. Nearly everyone is working for 3 of the 5 days (or so). Our weather is inconsistent at best. The best players don't really feature. No atmosphere usually and I for one don't go anymore. I know a few others that don't either. So that does somewhat go towards why the T20 and one dayers are more popular. Frustrating our test team struggles but it's sort of understandable.

 

The counties rely on T20 games and ECB handouts.
Non test grounds/counties are basically bankrupt without the handout. Even test grounds struggle if there’s rain, early finishes or the games are poorly attended (v lesser nations not Aus/India)

The golden goose of T20 and the ECB are firmly to blame for the state of our test team, don’t even get me started on the hundred. maybe test cricket is dead we just don’t know it yet.

 

Even the limited overs stuff might not be as easy we we think to get some wins. I have just watched Ben McDermott for the Hobart Hurricanes get one of the best T20 100s I have ever seen. Up there with anything Christopher Henry Gayle did in his prime. 127 off 65 out last ball run out being a team player trying to get an extra run. His last game he got 110 not out. The first player in Big Bash history to get back to back 100s and the first ever player to get three 100s in the Big Bash. His innings before that he got 67. The captain of the opposition today was Aaron Finch so he did it against the Australia ODI captain. Get ready for him to be unleashed on us.

 

Giles isn't far off getting a game.

Cricket is struggling to remain relevant. Village clubs up and down the country are losing players. The World Cup win was a small boost but didn't address the long term decline of the sport. The recent T20 World Cup barely registered in the national consciousness. The single biggest factor in all of this is the lack of cricket on free TV. Outside of old traditionalists nobody believes Test cricket is the pinnacle of the sport because it isn't exhibited and discussed in the way it should be. The one day game is currently more visible, more exciting, more financially rewarding, and is pretty much the only thing keeping the game alive.

So basically the players support Root staying on as captain but want Silverwood gone. No doubt he will carry the can for this disgraceful tour but it goes way beyond him.
Woakes very vague on the future of Silverwood in this article.

How's about the players start taking some responsibility for not doing the ******* basics.
Woakes has been dog **** with the ball and shouldn't be anywhere near the test team.

Not England or Aus but South African Quinton De Kock has retired from test cricket to spend more time with his family (first child due shortly).
He's only 29 but does say see you for the ODI's and T20. He's clearly happy to take the easy money and also go play franchise cricket. Some players just aren't interested in test match cricket anymore and it's such a shame.

I know SA and also countries like WI struggle to pay players as much as the franchise mercenaries but this is big. A loss
