This is why Root is such a weak captain. You bring on your slow bowler 7 minutes before lunch and immediately put 3 men out deep on the leg side. It's negative, it's actually saying to Leach I don't trust you or have much confidence in you as a bowler.
It also allows the Aussies to keep the scoreboard moving with easy singles.
Leach should be wanting to take wickets, not just do a holding job.
After a good morning for England, I'm baffled by these tactics.

131-4 at lunch. Can't let these two get away in the afternoon session and undo the hard work. That was a good morning for England, their best session so far in my opinion. And this is why we're all so pissed off, because they've just shown what they can do when they apply themselves and keep that consistency going. Kudos to Jimmy who bowled a fantastic spell and was unlucky not take more wickets. He frequently beat the outside edge.

And that's me done, off to bed now :D!
Probably wake up and the Aussies are 280 odd and only 5 down!!

Why is he bowling round the wicket to the left handers? Don't get it.

Makes no sense at all. Get Anderson straight on after lunch with anyone but Leach. It's absolutely baffling the tactics we are using.

Anderson is bowling a fantastic spell and also Wood at the other end at 90mph looking good.

Think we've bowled well today in the first 2 sessions.

At long last, a slight bit of hope.

Eighth pair are going to go for a few quick runs now …. as they do !

bowled fantastic 1st session, hoped we'd be about parity after 1st innings
looking like 75-100 behind now, meaning that we'll be 4 down before we catch up

82 run deficit. Probably too many with our batting but nice to see the test match isn’t completely over.

Gower has just said there is still a lot of noise and atmosphere at the MCG ???
Are the Barmy boys not there or is there a co-vid related restriction ?

I fear that the opening slots will have to wait for the sons of Strauss and Cook to fill.
I think they’ve 2 each so what are the odds ………

Can’t we just get a decent opening partnership for once? Depressing how inevitable this is.

Malan didn’t really show intent to hit the ball.
6 inch gap or so it looked to me

Think that’s problem with DRS. It’s encouraging umpires to raise their finger as at worst it can be overturned.
