Look, it's clear that you rate him and that's fair enough ...

.... and I accept some of your argument about 'the team' being at fault, not closing down the opposition etc. but you can't blame 'the team' for the keeper being anchored on his line for every corner and the centre halves having to head the ball out from inside their own six-yard box.

As Lodgy said the other night at Plymouth, if he came for the ball, 9 times out of ten he would get a free kick if he missed it, all keepers do. He causes problems cos he's **** scared to come for the ball and that's not 'the team's' fault, it's his bloody fault!

I don't think he is brilliant

just not half as bad as some make out!

Boz Myhill is supposed to be one of the best in the league yet he had a stinker against us, it doesn't make him a bad keeper!

    He's OK

    as cover.

I personally agree with Albatross - he puts the defence under pressure because they can be pretty sure that he wont claim crosses that a decent keeper would.

Our defensive frailties are exacerbated by his ineptitude in the air.

    You've forgotten the worst..

    Tony Bullock.

Colgan is bad at many things (not too quick off his line, not great at crosses, hesitant, prone to letting the ball slip between his hands/under body at times) which unnerves the defence, he is also poor at playing the quick ball to enable a counter attack. However, as a shot stopper he is one of the best I have seen, up there with Watson.

Having Colgan playing behind them cannot always give the defence a great deal of confidence, vice versa, having our back four covering you cannot give Colgan any hope, especially as they faul to stop crosses coming in and and not the best in the air.

I'm afraid it's not as simple as to blame one player. Okay, I've lost count of the number of times I've said this season re: Colgan, 'that seems to have gone straight through him' or 'he should have done better with that'. But our Centre Halves are not strong enough to deal with the more powerful forwards in this division and our Full Backs are neither quick enough, strong enough or good enough to deal with pacy, penetrative wide men. Pace and power kills us at the back. Lets just hope these are qualities that some (enough) of the teams we have yet to play don't have at their disposal.

I'm not blaming one player ........

..... I agree with your comments about the back four ..... and what others have said about the team defending as a unit ........ but I still think Colgan is a weakness that should be addressed.

If we'd had a decent keeper all season I don't think we would have conceded as many goals as we have, even allowing for our other defensive frailties, and therefore could well be in a much better league position

Didn't Colgan lose his place to Bullock when we loaned him to Dundee? nt
