As a gang we used to play on the construction works for the M 1. I'd be about 8 or 9 at the time and I was one of the older ones.

We also used to climb trees and make 'tarzans', we made dens and lit fires to cook beans or spaghetti hoops we'd half inch from our Mum and Dads.

Once we left our houses we used to check in for our dinners and then disappear until it got dark.

The number of times we could have been seriously injured or worse abducted (Myra Hindley and Brady were around at that time) doesn't bear thinking about.

This is an awful awful thing that has happened to this young lad and my thoughts are with his family.

putting aside any possible news that it was something sinister, would those of you who said played out when merely 5-8 really have been in a position to react to a problem or danger let's say of getting trapped?

As adults we are certainly more prepared to respond to an emergency. At <10 and alone I think not.

I agree 100% with what you've said. I speak as someone who never allowed mine off the street until they were in their teens. We are constantly horrified at the number of very young kids out unsupervised next to main roads.

It's a terrible things to happen, i feel for the family and all involved.

But i do remember going often to the slag heaps up at Blacker Hill, also playing in Bluebell Wood and the Pond down Hay Green Lane. As you also mentioned, be home for 1730 as it's dinner at 1745 and then out for the rest of the evening.

Safer times in our day Dave, all the parents in the area knew each other and would keep an eye on us. People don't even talk to the next door neighbour these days.

RIP to the little un. Awful news. Thoughts with the family.

Me and Mario used to go off on our own at that age. Gone all day, back for tea, then gone again til dark (or later if we were happy to face the bollocking when we got home). We used to wander around Wetherby all day while my mum worked at a hotel. We also spent years playing on a building site at not much older than this poor lad. Different times though, although building sites were just as dangerous I suppose.

tragic, though far too early to point fingers

My kids aged 10 -12, both go out with friends probably both usually at most a mile from our house, unless the oldest has gone to cinema etc on a afternoon.

Both got an Iphone which i insist is always changed and we can keep tabs on them with find my iphone app. Some people moan about kids having phones etc, but the technology is their so we use it. More often than not we end up picking them up from where ever they are

Fair enough it was the 80's when I was growing up - I lived in the same area as the poor young lad that died today and there was some pretty vile things happened, no-one at a penny to scratch their a*se with as the pits were shutting, people were getting burgled every night, you'd see a burnt out car every other day, obviously being a kid and not knowing any better it doesn't concern you too much but comparing the same area as it is now to back then it is much better...and to be fair people do actually talk to each other down there, there's much more of a community spirit and everyone says hello to each other on the high street, I've never had that anywhere else I've lived, you say 'morning' in a lot of places and all you get is a dirty look! ha ha.

The sad thing about modern life to me is that parents don't let their kids have freedom to develop and play on their own. Statistically we live in probably the safest of all eras for kids. Kids stuck indoors playing computer games rather than learning interaction and development skills getting obese and lacking exercise are much more dangerous than allowing them some freedom. Of course bad things can happen but it's an uncertain life we delicate humans lead.

    Many thoughts to the parents.

Thanks for that info mate. Yeah I could just imagine what growing up during the hardships of the pit closures could have been like. Not nice for any youngster and a nightmare for any parent bringing up kids.
I can only hope that foul play is not involved in the young lads tragic death.

Sounds like a tragic accident. Sneaked into the construction site like he has done before and fell into a pipe

    Awful tragedy.

Feel sorry for the parents as well.

I've been told that he was at the local park (a few hundred metres away from his house with his mates in Worsbrough) & not Locke park.

Seems he's decided to do a bit of exploring on the way home & the worst has happened.

If this is true there's a lot of people who should be feeling ashamed who've posted some horrible comments on we are Barnsley, South Yorkshire police & look north pages on Facebook today.

I found it hard to believe anyone would let a 7 year old walk 2 miles to Locke park from Worsbrough alone & it seems they didn't.

To be fair, it wouldn't be the people commenting's fault that it was reported wrongly, if that was the case. Surely the parents in that case would agree that letting a 7 year old play that far away at that time would be irresponsible but that they shouldn't be wrongly accused of doing so and therefore judged harshly. If he was indeed at a local park then I think the parents are owed an apology from the reporters rather than the commentors who were given wrong 'facts'.

I'm puzzled. If it was simply a case of the media reporting incorrectly then why were police at Locke park? And surely the police and his family would have been quick to correct the inaccuracies as they were appealing for help at the time. I suspect that either he was at Locke park or his family for whatever reason didn't know where he had been playing and speculated Locke park

I've just been looking for updated reports but everything is consistently saying Locke Park, I've not seen a single thing mention a local park instead. (Not that the comments on facebook etc. help in any way, even if he was there.)

Not entirely, they could have held their opinions until the full facts are known but no it's easier to pile in pretending they are perfect whilst not knowing the correct information and making themselves look like judgemental twits.

The facts were known, he'd left Locke Park at 8pm - that was never in dispute. They could have held their opinions full stop as they're not particularly helpful but the facts of where he was seen last and at what time were already known.
