Went with the Coach and Horses on Sheffield Road. Arrived 7.25 parked who knows where. Sprinted to the ground (we were younger then) arriving just after 7.30. They’d delayed the kick off by 15 minutes so we saw everything. The journey back to the bus was a nightmare with scouse scroats ambushing everyone. Still remember the chant in the ground “Where’ your famous fuckin Cop?” as the 17,000 Reds fans completely drowned out the home end.
We got there about 20mins in,what a fantastic atmosphere.I think it was the only time the Kop has ever been out sung brilliant
We were one of the lucky coaches and got there before kick off after a bit of a nail biting journey. Great night inside , bit ‘lively’ on the way back to the coaches. On the way in we picked a scouser up who was running late and gave him a lift in exchange for directions to get there quicker
I was there - for the last half hour.... has to rank as one of the very best performances by a Barnsley team, Liverpool at the time were far and away the best club team in Europe if not the world. We also played very well in the replay, 3-1 flattered Liverpool that night.
I saw the full match! We arrived thinking we would miss most of it due to fog etc. We were on a coach from oakwell....arrived at 7.30 in ground....im sure they put the kick off back 15 mins. Brilliant night...dodgy getting to and from ground.
One of the memorable moments of watching my BFC. We had a few beers too. Can't remember ever taking 17k to an away game again other than Wembley.
Somebody far cleverer than me but a video on YouTube a few years back. Not only is it beautiful, evocative and a lasting tribute to my favourite Reds manager..... If you listen to the soundbite right at the end with the credits, it's no wonder we gave them a game. Truly inspirational. What a man, what a time to be a Reds fan.
My favourite manager n’all mate. The football we played under him was breathtaking. Some say it was Clarke’s team. Fact is we would never have played like that under him. That’s not to knock Clarke. He was the one who created the transition to being an established 2nd tier club. But Hunter got us there.
Sorry to hear that mate. Saw your Terry int mount at one of the last home games. 1st time in yrs. dunt look much older. Was with Leaky.
I Remember the Junction lot. (Fev) Dint get int ground till 20minutes afore the end. Had their Skylights put through on the bus. A Mate from Hoyland having his Sheepskin coat taken off him. Another unconfirmed rumour. one bloke gave his wedding ring away or it would have been taken with his finger attached. Whilst not condemning all Liverpool fans it certainly altered my views on how they were portrayed as the best fans going. As I don’t think they had a bad reputation. Compared to the likes of Man Utd's. Leeds. Chelsea and pompey at that time.
We got there for the last 30 minutes. We had been off the coach less than a minute when a pint pot was thrown at us from a pub behind the Kop. As we walked around the ground to our end, all you could hear was our fans singing "We're gonna Wembley, we're gonna Wembley, you're not, you're not". The scenes in the ground were unbelievable, if a little scary at times for a kid crush wise. The team gave it all they got and might have won it, if the likes of Glavin and Parker had been available. Scary turned to terrified after the game though. Our coach was one of half a dozen which had just parked on a side street near the ground. A bunch of local scroats attacked the coaches and the bus window next to me was hit by a section of garden fencing that had been ripped up. They got chased away, but later big lumps of ice were dropped onto the coach roof as we went under bridges on the way out of Liverpool. We had to give a lift back to two lads whose minibus had been overturned in 1997 as well. The locals can certainly be very inhospitable.
Went ont special, they laid buses on for us and dropped us near the ground. We were that delighted with the result we realised we hadn't a clue where they had parked up to take us back to the station. Ended up getting a service bus full of Liverpool fans with black eyes and bloody noses. Longest journey of my life!!!
