RE: I've taken 2 sick days in last 4 years We're getting very strict. 3 periods of absence - for ANY reason - equals an automatic verbal warning. As does 3% absence or more (around 8 days). No exceptions - unless for preganancy reasons!!
absolutely right most sick days are hangover days or "can't be bothered days" not proper poorly. No time for it.
your HR policies aren't aggressive enough The DDA calls for reasonable adjustments, it doesn't allow unlimited sick
Yeh mate you can, no doubt but employees are increasingly taking the same stance! I'll work when I want to. They are taking the piss.
RE: absolutely right There's a guy I know who works for South Lanarkshire council. If you ask him how many days holiday he has a year, he'll say "Fifty - twenty five holidays, and twenty-five sick". There's a bg rush at the end of the year for everyone to take their sick days because, if they stay within the 25 days of sickness every year, the council can't touch them in terms of disciplinary. Public sector is the place to work if you want to take the piss...!!!!! Just imagine - 50 days paid holiday EVERY YEAR!!
true disciplinary: "but i was genuinely sick" maybe on 2, not on fecking 5 in a rolling 12months!!!!!
RE: true Our stance at work is quite clear - we NEVER debate the REASON for people being off. We say that EVERY absence is genuine - the reason(s) is not the issue, it's their overall absence level that's the issue. We point-out that they have signed a contract to say that they will work 5 days a week, and they are not fulfilling the terms of their contract, therefore we have to discipline them. They soon shut up when you ask them "So you're not able to fulfill your contractual obligations, then?" as they know if they answer "yes" then we'll sack them on the spot.
RE: your HR policies aren't aggressive enough Spot on - but there's no legislation which outlines what a "reasonable adjustment" is. It's up to the tribunal, ultimately, to decide if what was offered was reasonable or not. The difficulty is usually if someone is registered disabled.
It's a disgrace it really is I can't stand this attitude. Would we have built the canals and bridges and roads with this "sicknote" culture? Make no wonder China is coining it in - willing workforce. and has anyone in China filled in a Risk Assessment? complied with new Fire Regulations .. we are a dinosaur .. our best workers are Polish ffs.
RE: It's a disgrace it really is Couldn't agree more, mate. Just because I'm an HR Manager doesn't mean I agree with all this crap. However, the litigeous culture we live in means that we need to ensure our backsides are covered against these, for want of a better word, w**kers.
RE: i'm just gonna employ Poles, they work like buggary We took on a load of Slovakians last month and our local guys hate them - mainly because they do twice the amount of work and do it without any moaning or complaining. No wonder all our work is getting out-sourced to foreign countries...
RE: Don't get me going on the disabled! I have a friend who is in a wheelchair. She accepts that she can't do everything but she loves establishments (pubs) that try to give her access. We spent £30k on a lift. Not just for her but for our less than able punter. She is spot on. some venues don't comply, some do. She's just a mate anyway.
