    This is the most recent report I've been able to find - things like this are always a year or two behind while they wait to gather the information. On a fairly cursory glance, it appears to confirm that women are not harshly treated by the system, and that in general they are more likely to come before it for less serious offences than men.

    The summary seemingly contradicts something I said earlier - that there are disproportionate numbers of women sent to prison. I think I've fallen prey to some of the siren voices you hear from certain organisations - "too many women are sent to prison!". That's a separate argument - there don't appear to be too many as a proportion of all offenders!

    It's a right tricky old area. Unless you are comparing disposals for two identical offences it's difficult to compare outcomes by gender. And most judges or lawyers would say no two offences are alike!
