Starting as a boy with Hemsworth Wanderers, he went to Scnuthorpe United as a junior and reserve team player before returning back to his home area and turning out with Ossett Town and Ossett Albion. A halfback, who loved to get on the scoresheet, Ronnie had spells at Hemsworth Town, Kinsley Boys and Hemsworth MW, and was part of the Hemsworth squad which went to Alberta, Canada, in 1984 to play nine matches out there, organised by former Hemsworth junior soccer coach Tony Harrison. When he decided to hang up his boots as a player in 1990, he continued his love for <strong style="color: black; background-color: #a0ffff">football[/b] by obtaining level one and two coaching qualifications, and was involved in instructing youngsters at schools in the Wakefield District before joining Doncaster Rovers as a youth team coach.
