RE: Get behind em! I do not watch them train. I see most home academy games. You are right that a young side cannot be expected to compete with the likes of Manchester City. However, they have been badly outplayed in every game this season (see my reports of other games). It is also hard to tell what age the opposition is. I have not asked any youngster about their Oakwell experience. Do you have any knowledge that you wish to share with us in this area? In my view, from what I see on a Saturday, it is. Ronnie Branson's instructions from the sideline are akin to those I would expect from an enthusiastic parent. I would be particularly critical of shouted instructions to a player on the ball. How does he know what the players decisions would be if he is taking part in his decisionmaking process. Surely, he should remain quiet before the event and do any neccessary coaching afterwards, either whilst the ball is dead or at half time or after the final whistle. There are many other examples, but this is the one that grinds most of all. The contract is for 2 years only now. The league is for under 18s. The full list of lads is on the official website. There are only 6 second years, and frankly, the first years are playing because the second years are mostly very poor. I do not think that the pattern is quite as you state it. The club try to bring the most promising youngsters through into the reserves as early as possible. This means that the lads could be playing 2 games in a week. Eventually, this means that they have to be rested and the academy team can suffer. Results are bound to improve as the young lads get older. However, 5 years ago, when I began watching the academy regularly, the team finished 2nd. For the last 2, they have been in the bottom 2. See above. I do not see any benefit, now that we have made the investment in coaching facilities, to drop back to a centre of excellence.
Well, he is only a first year, and he is playing in a defense with other first years so there is little on the field help or leadership, but in my opinion, he lacks pace and has a tendency for ball watching.
RE: In summary, therefore probably because the parents have seen home grown talent abused out of all proportion. would you want your lad playing for us & being subjected to the sort of punishment dished out to our players?
How many times have we seen and heard people say things like this "xxx got turned away from Oakwell. He got offered a scholarship at manchester united" "...got turned away, hes at wednesdays academy now" "...was told he's too small, hes going for trials at leeds" "...wasnt good enough for barnsley, wednesday and villa are interested" I've seen it countless times where young kids are turned away from Oakwell without being given a proper chance only to then go and impress at the same age group of more successful academy sides. It's as though the coaches aren't spotting the talent when it is put in front of them and if they aren't doing that then it doesn't matter how much money you spend on facilities, a lemon is still a lemon if you paint it orange.
They didn't do too bad really.................................... the Man.City team who beat or lads 6-1, Won 9-2 the week before against Middlesbrough U18s.

RE: How many times have we seen and heard people say things like this should give 3years not 2 as all kids develop at different rates

RE: How many times have we seen and heard people say things like this Who was the last really good player to come out of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough. I don't care which club brought him through, I am just trying to underline my point about the lack of talent produced within the Barnsley Borough. I can't think of anyone since David Hirst. Patrick Cryne has stated that he would love to see a side made up of lads from Barnsley. Fat chance based upon recent history.
RE: They didn't do too bad really.................................... Theres something wrong there Red Rain isnt there, the lads cant be that bad can they?

Always thought the lad Jennings who played last season would have made something, always seemed unruffled and had good distribution of the ball, what happened to him.
Top notch post from your good self again Thank you. Oh for an Academy that could produce talent like Tommy Taylor, Arthur Kaye, Pat Howard, Mick McCarthy or David Hirst, assuming such talent still exists in the area.
RE: They didn't do too bad really.................................... Last win 6 October 2007 (Middleborough Away) 2-1 Last home win 1 September 2007 (Blackburn Rovers) 1-0 When did the first team go more than a year without a home win?
Would a player Such as Anton Otulakowski or Stewart Barrowclough be allowed to express themselves on the pitch in the present Academy style of coaching?
