Red Robin who is a Swindon Town supporter and I work for the same company. I haven't a clue who Jack Tyke is.
He may work here too but I don't know who he is.

I take your point that Barnsley did not seem to last the game as well as Derby, but I do not think that fitness was not the only reason. As I said in my report, I felt that Derby's 4:3:3 worked much better than our 4:4:1:1. It left Fearnehough and Crapper outnumbered in central midfield for much of the game. I also felt that Derby looked older and they were certainly bigger. We compounded this mismatch by taking off Reffin (quite a big lad) and bringing on Briscoe (a midget). Later we took off Crapper (our workhorse in midfield) and replaced him with Adam who does not want to work in that position. Finally, we took off Watts (another tall lad) and replaced him with Warburton (small, even for a midget). I did not think that any of these changes could be with a view to improving the team, as clearly they did not, so I have assumed that there was some other agenda. Hence, I have presumed in my report that once they were a goal down they wanted to look at Mellor at fullback, Adam in midfield and Warburton on the wing. With the team in mid-table there is no reason to go all out in every game for the rest of the season. Between now and the end of March the future of the 2nd year boys will be decided and games will be more about deciding who to keep and who to let go.

A very fair point about the 2nd year scholars. Do you not think that in view of the impending decision about their futures that they should be given more playing opportunity?
I think that perhaps one or two already know that they have no future at the club. I heard on Saturday that a couple of them are going out on trial to another clubs for the next week or two.

Its been said before, but i really think our academy is a waste of time

Who we had make any money off, Flinders?? One player for how many years of it?

Everytime a player gets near first team its coz first team are playing that ***** and manager is struggling that bad.

Look at the lad Butterfield, he's looked really good couple of times he has come on, but once Colace, Anderson and loanees are back in 11 he won't get near it. The only way he will is if he can come in one time and do what likes of Michael Johnson and Stephen Ireland at City have done, thats the only way i see the academy actually paying off, if not bloody well scrap it and stop wasting the clubs money and time

Rant over

As you say, most of the decisions will already have been made. If a second year is not in the side "on merit" by now, then I think that it is probably too late for them. However, these decisions, no matter that they are taken for valid reasons, will be unpopular with some players who may feel that they have not had a chance. That is why I think Mellor was given a chance at left back and possibly why Watts was tried at left wing.

I agree that our academy's performance in the last 6 year is pretty indefensible. However, unlike yourself, I would like to see it fixed, rather than binned.

Wonder what happened with Butterfields intended loan to Grimsby, read that he had a short trial and then he was back at Oakwell,he shows plenty of promise but needs to stop thinking hes Brian Howard.

If one of the current 1st year group made it to the 1st team and I know that's a big"if", or if RNL was sold to a big club, would you then consider the Academy as worthwhile.
Other small clubs like Crewe make it work, is it impossible for Barnsley to make it pay?

Thats what im getting at, they never do move for money

I'd love us to have a few academy lads break into first team, contribute to overall team, then get sniffed by a Premier league team and rob their eyeballs out for 750 or a million that we can use on squad

But it dosen't happen, if RNL went for a couple of million, then yes i would defo want it to stay

You may be correct about why the substitutions were made, I really don't know, however I have my doubts about it being about a genuine last look at players. If this was the case, then why wasn't Ronnie Branson or Dave Hancock or even Simon Davey watching the game?

Does anyone know who makes the decision on which of the Academy players are offered professional contracts? Surely Simon Davey has to have a big say in the decision. But how many games/times has he watched each player play?

I totally agree and have yet to hear a realistic suggestion as to what would replace it.

Many of the posters of here would scrap it, save the "huge" amount of investment, and just keep buying players!
But as I said earlier, if Crewe and the likes can make it pay, why can't Barnsley?

If I was a parent of one of our academy players, I would be furious that "Red Rain" for suggesting that they are not decent players with his remark that you can't make a "silk purse out of a sow's ear". This is extremely disrespectful to the boys. What does that say for players of the other five clubs who are beneath us in the Academy league? He is clearly not content with just "bashing" them in the reports, he now thinks they are all just not good enough! What gives him the right to be "judge and jury" on these kids? For someone who claims to be in favour of the Academy, he has a funny way of showing it!

Secondly how does he feel that the club are in danger of ruining RNL? What have they done to him? Or are we looking to blame Mr Branson for something else? Other than the 5 minutes he played for the 1st team against Doncaster, I have only seen him play once - in the Youth cup game against Walsall, and he looked okay. But he's only fifteen for god's sake! Why don't we all just leave him alone to grow up and develop without any additional pressure. And hopefully our club will see the benefits in a few years time.

No idea. Definitely not at work, though. Honest.

And Crewe are where, exactly?

Are people really so desperate for academies to be seen as a worthwhile venture that they point to a team occupying a relegation spot in the league below us and suggest that's a model for success?

I'm sure Crewe fans are delighted that they produced Dean Ashton and Danny Murphy for others while their own team struggles for survival.

Wonder if our coaching staff read todays article in the Sun?

GUUS HIDDINK has revealed he is eyeing Chelsea's younger players to freshen up his team.
The Dutchman, who took over as boss at Stamford Bridge last week, watched the reserves last night in order to assess his options.

And after seeing teen stars Franco Di Santo and Miroslav Stoch in action, Hiddink is confident the future is bright.

He said: "It is good for me having the experience of seeing the second team.

"I think that even if you are a big club, and even if the first team is settled, you must always create some space for youngsters.

"They are always promising and that is why we always have to keep an eye on them."

When asked about the first-team prospects of Slovakian starlet Stoch, Hiddink said: "He is a good guy.

"There are more young good guys and, of course, Ray Wilkins and I are talking a lot about this.

"If they have the quality to come in, we won't hesitate to do so."
