"coaching you wanna think about developing" is just about there. Lets take the first team. if they are not producing results (Wins) inevitably its the "manger" that's at fault. Now, producing results (player's capable of 1st team), why doesn't it follow the same route. To me, its down to the management of the Academy and its staff. So, lets me take a number of fan's views on here and direct it at the "leader" of teh academy (whoever that is) and get rid of the useless **** and install someone who knows a thing or 2.
Just in the same way as we do now believe it or not, Barnsley is one of the first clubs that certain agents phone, those agents represent players in South America and Europe, and now that we have a significant foreign contingent, we're viewed as a decent option, even for those capable of making the step up into the Prem. Im arguing that a better strategy than the fruitless toil with domestic Academies, is to further develop our contacts abroad, raising the profile of the club and offering opportunities for trials etc in a market that is not as sown up or saturated as in this country. There is countless reasons why the domestic Academy structure isnt working, there's no reason why Barnsley cant capitalise on the trend of bringing in talent from abroad, with the same amount of investment.
RE: "coaching you wanna think about developing" what experience have the coaches got we all know they have badges everyone has .but what level have they played ? most academys have old pros who have played at quite a high level some where in thier set up what do our academy staff bring to the table
RE: Second Year Students What I like about Watts is that he is prepared to work hard for the team and not just for himself like some of the lads around him. He's scored a few goals lately but may find it difficult to sustain a place whilst Adam is in the team. As for Bennett, I think he's very good in a 1 on 1 situation with the keeper but not sure of his awareness of other players' movement around him - but time is on his side. I thought comments on Grundy a bit harsh. I actually think Grundy's been our best defender of late. Having said that, I don't think any of the defenders seem that comfortable with the ball. They all have a tendency to hit it long rather than pass itl into the midfield.
I was talking to a Newcastle parent last Saturday morning at the academy game. He pointed out their Swedish keeper who he told me also played in the Swedish U21 team. He told me that the lad, who would have been Under 18 at the begining of the season was being paid £1500 per week. I cannot see how we can compete on neutral territory with the likes of Newcastle. At least, within the Barnsley area we theoretically have first pick provided we have an academy. Unless the rules have changed recently, you have to be an established international to get a work permit if you are not a citizen of the EU. This is why the young players brought in by Arsenal and Man U from outside the EU have to go to Europe to their feeder clubs until they either become entitled to an EU passport or they become an established international.
A lot depends on the scouting network and picking up the best kids. Doesn't have to be the Man U's either. Leeds, Huddersfield, Middlesborough all seem to be able to pick up lots of good kids. Leeds and Hudds scouting networks seem to be all over West Yorks. Don't know much about Barnsley's network but a worrying thing to me is the way coaches at the academy seem to have a kid there. Could be the fact that the kid is good because he's keen and enthused by the parent but?
If you look at the academy profiles it seems that the majority of our academy is picked up from the Pennines & were rejected by Premiership clubs like Bolton. Mate of mine used to play for the Barnsley Boys & he said that the coach at the time wouldn't sub his kid & he played each game. Looks like it continues now as well.
TBH the only time I've spoken to a coach at the academy was a couple of years ago. He told me that it had been a real mess with admin etc. and they were a skeleton staff trying to turn it round. Said most of the coaching plans had been left by Fazackerly, who had huge wads of them. Mind you, his lad was at the academy at the time too.
