When we go east coast I book 12 weeks ahead. Eg London from Donny return is about £20 that way. Peterborough was £9. Sometime though no point booking early as no cheaper eg Blackpool £36 book on day or last November
There only available until April on East Coast website mate. Once the May dates are realised then the cheap tickets will come online. Book them through that as two singles and I'm certain you'll get it cheaper. They'll probably be released start of Feb. From Donny there will be a really good choice of times, usually a couple an hour. You will pay more on a Sunday but shouldn;t be £100 each
thetrainline is NEVER EVER cheaper the nationalrail.co.uk and is often more expensive with booking fees and credit card charges. East Coast website is the cheapest as they will also deduct an on-line discount for tickets on their trains Advance tickets are only released 12 weeks before travel date so for May you will have to wait a few weeks yet to get them. If you do go the "Advance" ticket way, you are fixed to a particular train. (very expensive if you miss it) Often it is cheaper to split the journey. i.e. for Edinburgh buy singles from Leeds (or Doncaster or Wakefield) and buy separate tickets between Barnsley and there. I've just had a quick look and it is £37 each way Barnsley/Edinburgh in March (May tickets not yet out) or £17.40 each way Doncaster/Edinburgh First Class is showing at £40.60 northbound and only £33-15 southbound from Donny and with that you get meals and booze thrown in.(not unlimited but worthwhile)
I went from Leeds to Edinburgh at the start of November travelling Friday and Sunday and I got 2 singles for £60 overall only 3 weeks in advance so you will be able to get cheaper than that.
I'll tell you what I'll never complain about buying tickets at Oakwell again. It's simplicity personified compared to train tickets. I feel like I've enrolled for a degree in medicine and just been given an entire semester's notes. Thanks everyone, I'll try to digest it all.
Re: I'll tell you what Yep. ******* mental. Best way to travel though. Lovely route to Edinburgh too. Right along the coast
google split tickets, breaks the journey up ie barnsley to leeds - leeds to newcastle - newcastle to edinburgh. you actually stay on the same mainline train but have about 4 tickets for the one journey, there are often localised deals that don't show up on the trainline / east coast etc.... failing that book 12 weeks in advance and go off peak.
Sundays especially **** holiday tend to be limited on cheaper tickets.... Go Friday afternoon to late Monday morning.
I will ask my mate Tony the Tooth who takes that train every week on the London-York leg. He's got booking down to a fine art and gets a return for as little a £14.
Split ticketing.... ....as someone else has mentioned on here is definitely the way forward for Edinburgh. Last year it took loads of fannying around for us to get anywhere near a realistic price to get back from there, but in the end did it by going to Manchester, then taking the airport train across to Sheffield. Under no circumstances drive to Edinburgh unless you have somewhere free to park. We did it and spent nearly as much on parking as our hotel. Plus the car is of little use when you're there as the bus services are cheap and plentiful. Amazing city though. Be sure to try some Williams beers when you're there, plus plenty of excellent and very reasonably priced restaurants.
Re: I'll tell you what You're welcome, Jay. Have you considered calling The Don & asking to borrow his Private Jet? Don "King Lear" Rowing.
I booked for Birmingham last week £88 return first time on a train in £30 years. Sent from my iPhone using Forum Runner
