RE: unfortunatly mystic meg wasnt a miner nt Neither was my dad nor am I.............but I trust my instincts .....................not the Tory party.............the town of Barnsley was largely built on the back of the coal industry...........it's my heritage..........I'm proud of that........I'm proud of my town ....my forefathers...........and people who have undermined my heritage need to be reminded of that
Well the 2 kids that got kicked out by the police near us couldn't have been any older than 18. And thats all they could shout. To be honest i was so happy when the filth took em. Worse thing and shows how thick they were was that they only 4 rows in front of the police box!!
i think we could have got behind the team more today, sang more songs supporting them and to be honest the amount of times i heard the 'scab' chants i could count on my hand.
RE: quick question The miners were so close to winning that dispute - and removing the Tories as a repercussion - even without any help from the Notts people. The strike would have only lasted a few months if EVERYONE had come out and stayed out. The selfishness was all on the Notts side. By not standing shoulder to shoulder with the rest they helped sign, not only the industries death warrant, but those of countless communities as well, including some of thei own. The Notts miners have historically done this, so needed little persuasion to do it again when Thatcher promised them their jobs would be safe. They chose to believe someone we all knew couldn't be trusted for short term benefit. She was lying. Everyone had families, but this was a sacrifice everyone in Yorkshire knew they had to make because of the leaked pit closure programme. No-one starved because the community rallied together.
i was at the far end, dint really hear that much apart from forest fans. we kinder ended up starting songs just as they finished as well. but am sure they weren't all game. perhaps 'hands' mite have been more accurate and maybe a toe or two?
Maybe if Mr Scargill had an unequivocal mandate for whole out strike then history would have had a different story
That old chestnut Only ever heard that excuse from the scabs. Wouldn't have made any difference to the Notts lot. Rotten to the core.
It Is so sad to read that such an important piece of Barnsley history has already been forgotten by so many Barnsley people.
RE: Was there a ballot of the whole of the union ? nt Notts miners had their own ballot and 20,000 out of 27,000 voted to work. Are you telling me that they would have gone with the result of a national ballot to strike? What many people forget is that the NUM did have a mandate to take strike action if one pit was theatened with closure. The argument by those who didn't wish to adhere to it, was that it was out of date.
Should we stop ... when the press have a go at Germany everytime our national team plays em? Or should we stop the chants against Sheffield teams, calling them "Dee Dahs"? Should they call not us "Dingles"? It's called banter. Live with it.
As a veteran of the 84-85 strike, I say **** the scabs for ever. Sausage Chips And Beans, henrys etc etc once a scabbing t*at always a scabbing tw*t
