I started going to oakwell in the 79/80 season so also saw Glavin play, and agree that he was a quality player but for me it has got to be Redfearn. The guy was superhuman for a couple of seasons. The year in the Premier League just showed how good he was. He was in a struggling side and playing against the best players in the country and he stood out. He had everything, shooting, passing, good engine, never say die attitude, and to top it off he was madly in love with BFC. When he kissed the badge he really meant it. If he had been playing for a more fashionable club he would have been an England international. He is my favourite player of all time from any club. A true legend.

    glavin

I can see your reasons, no disrespect, judging your age I would guess maybe you where not old enough to fully appreciatte Glavin. Redfearn was without doubt what I would like every player to pull on a Barnsley shirt to be like in commitment alone!
but Glavin..... we would have to sign someone like er er er

No disrespect taken mate. It is good to be considered young for once. But i do remember Glavin and like I said he was a quality player, but lets not forget he was doing it for BFC in the 2nd tier of english football, Redfearn did it at the very top. Also the thread is about favourite player, not necessarily most talented. There are other reasons in my post as to why Redders gets my vote. Neil Redfearn (worship) (worship)

McHale was once asked about being in Glavin`s shadow

his reply was " if he keeps getting me a win bonus, then I will keep giving him the ball". Really was the ideal foil for Glavin. Wish Togwell was as good .

    That midfield

With Banger banks and for a time Mike Lester - oh for a midfield like that now. Seem to think we had a decent centre half or 2 in them days too

    Got to be Ronnie G

for being a complete legend in his first spell, closely followed by Macca, Pat Howard, Roy ironside ( i wanted to be a goalie) and Redders and then theres Johnny Evans, Spud (great servant to the club) and....blody hell, there,s been loads over the years

    RE: That midfield

I thought that Macca and Evans complemented each others game. Unsung hero for me Ian Evans.

    Got to be Ronnie Glavin

Quickest over 10 yards I've seen at the well and knew where the goals were. Scored the best goal I've ever seen for The Reds, (at Elland Road, won 2-1) he picked the ball up near our goal line out towards the wing while defending a corner, beat 2 White ***** in our box, exchanged passes in the centre circle with David Johnson (ex-Liverpool, England International on loan at the time) and went through to slip it past the keeper. Sheer class.

    Mr Ronald Glavin

was the first barnsley player of my time that had the spark of genius.

to see him run at players with the ball , or make a run beyond aylott to pick the ball up in space and thump it in the back of then net was sheer joy for a kid of 8.

theres been a few others worthy of mention in the favourite player stakes since

    gwyn thomas
    neal redfearn
    mick McCarthy
    craig hignett
    paul futcher

all had that something extra that teams need , many at different times , many with differing qualities.

To be honest I'm struggling to remember any individual

games fromthe list you put up. I seem to remember going to Grimsby, Blackburn and Hillsborothat season but it seems to blur, we always seemed to lose 2-1 at Blackburn in them days I think.

Ronnie Glavin, but only just ahead of Redders.

I also recall Hunter picking Neil Cooper , rather than Glavin

During that particular period of games . Surprise , surprise we suddenly became less effective going forward . Cooper was a really good player , but by the time Hunter realised Glavin was more effective on the pitch than on the bench , we'd thrown away numerous winnable matches .

    Super John

Honestly don't think we could have done it without him.

And that first goal against Man U in the cup... just sublime. Will always be a god to me.

Ronnie Glavin, for those too young, well, you missed a treat.......

he literally struck fear into the opposition, wonderful vision, what he lacked in pace, he made up for it with speed of thought, some of his goals ( of which there were plenty) were magical, some players have come close to emulating him, Higgy, Hendrie to name 2 but Glavin for me is the finest footballer in my lifetime to have donned the scarlet jersey.
