As far as I can gather, she's a cis woman with heightened levels of testosterone. She isn't trans, she isn't a man and never has been. Previously disqualified by the IBA for failing 'gender eligibility criteria', but never confirmed what they failed. They did confirm however, that neither had testosterone testing. IMO there's not enough transparency. I understand the need for sensitivity, but it's all very complicated and I think the lack of transparency and general awareness around these decisions, just isn't helping.
My understanding is her birth gender is female but she has a genetic condition of some kind. Either not diagnosed or not disclosed. Whatever the case she isn't trans. Not that it's has stopped JK Rowling jumping on it with her bigotry while she pretends to care about the welfare of women.
Maybe the men who dominate the committees that decide these issues Could step up and not put it all on the competing athletes.
This is a very complex issue. Firstly, it must be awful to have your gender questioned continuously. That must be very hard to cope with mentally so I feel a great deal of sympathy for her. The Olympics is all about celebrating athletes who excel at their event and then Moto is faster, higher and stronger. You can’t then ban athletes just because they are so much better. On the flip side, contact sports like boxing are a slightly different case and safety has to be a main consideration. So I also have sympathy with the boxer who pulled out today. The IOC and governing bodies need to get a grip and decide what is, and what isn’t, an unfair generic advantage and apply that across all sports. It can’t though just discriminate though just because someone is so much better.
So I'll be honest something about this just doesn't sit right with me... so I started reading up on the disqualification of Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif in the 2023 boxing world championship and it gets WEIRD. The IBA never actually clarified what type of test the two women failed. It was originally described as a testosterone test. Then the Russian commissioner said it was a DNA test that showed they both had XY chromosomes. The test results have never been released but, as far as I can gather, cheek swab chromosome tests are notoriously unreliable and would need to be followed up with a much more in depth battery of tests. This does not appear to have happened. Is suspect for the same reason the decision wasn't appealed... Normally a result like this would obviously be investigated and/or appealled, but the IBA was abandoned by almost all countries after the World Championship event due to their direct ties to the Russian state. Thus no ban for either lady was ever enforced. Just the disqualification. It's actually almost certain that they have both been tested to some extent in the run up to these Olympics although it's all confidential. The IOC are confident that they meet the standards and criteria to be eligible to compete. I'd also like to point out that both these women have been competing in amateur boxing for a some time and neither are any more successful than other talented women in their divisions. Khelif has been competing for a very long time in amateur terms. Prior to these test fails, there is no suggestion either was ever accused of, or even suspected of, being anything other than a standard competitor. Khelif lost in the quarter finals of the 2021 Olympics. I have a horrible feeling we might actually be looking at a smear campaign against two talented young women who don't meet the accepted standards of attractiveness. But for the love of god, don't go look at the conversations about this on twitter. Editted as I keep saying IBC instead of IBA
Unfortunately, there are many millions of Bens occupying society and social media. Devoid of any empathy or the power of thought.
Oh Christ. The IBC banned Khelif directly after she defeated a Russian fighter (who was allowed to compete under the Russian flag due to the IBCs direct ties to Russia)
Just to be clear. The discredited Russian affiliated IBA are the only ones ever to claim she has XY. That test result was never released... Or even the type of test confirmed. This condition is not confirmed in Imane's case Moved from other thread as to keep controversial chat out of the main Olympics one
As I said to @Jay i may have wrongly assumed that the person who’s tweet I quoted knew more than me about this particular case.
Transphobes love to say things like a woman can’t have a penis yet here they seem to be saying someone with a vagina is a man. I’d say i’m surprised but being hypocritical is their entire personality.
For me if she is born a women then she's a women let her compete. I've coached women's and girls rugby for years. I've seen some lasses who you wouldn't believe were girls and not just because they have their hair short. Strong and powerful with manly features. Competing against some of the prettiest, daintiest lasses you seen. They all compete together in rugby week in week out and no one bats an eyelid. Just because this is on the biggest stage of all it's gone mad. Im sure there's men born faster stronger and more powerful than other men. No one would have said owt if it was a man absolutely battering another man
Like what the actual f**k? IBA holds chaotic news conference on Olympic boxing row - https://www.bbc.com/sport/olympics/articles/cq5dd2lz8y8o That clears that up then?!? What a set of absolute cretins
