The Tories have done nothing but backstab eachother in public. They also accepted £10m from a bloke who said Abbott should be shot.
Yep. mabe I wasn't clear enough. I was referring to comments of a racial or antisemitic nature. but do accept they do have their share of... Don't think in this instance even they would support the individual to become an MP in the coming election tho..
So she isn't barred, is free to stand, and is expected to be approved by the NEC at it's candidate confirmation meeting.
Unless the NEC decides to not approve her candidacy which nicely gets Starmer off the hook. Strange how, four years ago Keith (sic) Starmer was against the NEC imposing candidates on local parties, more flip flops than you see at the seaside. Wonder how the imposition of Luke Akehurst has gone down in North Durham with his views that wouldn't be out of place in Reform UK, namely that people smugglers should be shipped to Scotland amongst his other views? If Labour doesn't want left wing views in the party then they shouldn't expect those with liberal left views to put a cross against their candidates name.
I can't see he's on any hook. Abbott standing under the Labour banner is one more guaranteed seat. She won't get a government job, and away from an election, will have the whip withdrawn if/when she makes any more gaffs.
Ye. was thinking Sunak when I posted but good point ad fgot about Boris and his "Pillar box" comments.
I used to be a Labour member but the Iraq war put an end to that. I'm now a member of the Green Party. I don't know any Labour members so I am unable to ask them. I was (and still am) a white male and I never became leader. So what is it you're trying to say? Is it that the whole world is misogynistic? Because quite frankly it probably is. Personally, I believe that we are all equal. For every Nelson Mandela there is a Donald Trump and for every Mother Theresa there is a Georgia Meloni. Anyway, I've had a skinful and I'm off to bed, g'night all.
I suspect the days of Labour members having a say are long gone, for what it's worth, at either national or constituency level. They do have a tendency to make the wrong decisions... I'd vote Conservative ahead of the likes of Luke Akehurst, and gladly. I'm still waiting to find out more details about the droid they've dropped into my seat, if he bothers turning up to the constituency at all.
Be nice if Labour one day had a leader who was female or a POC. Even the Tories have managed it four times. It looks like "better than Tories" is enough for a landslide and actual policies with how they are going to implement things doesn't matter. https://x.com/PolitlcsUK/status/1796633766133211140?t=ITy_3sc5CxrMk14xnck6CA&s=19
They'll win this time because Starmer has the numbers to do what he wants, but I think they'll be punished next time around. You can only take your base for granted for so long, as Boris Johnson found out. The Labour voters round here are furious. Starmer had better hope he can keep the Tories onside.
Birmingham. I'm in Selly Oak, where we've been dropped a completely mysterious candidate who has no online presence at all and hasn't even bothered to introduce himself (but used to be in the army and got a cross?), and next door in Northfield they've been given a standard-issue London careerist. Selly Oak is rock solid but probably on the lefter side - I'd love to see the Greens give it a go. Northfield is usually Labour but went blue in 2019. Edit: Sorry, I've been moaning about this all day so I forgot that you didn't all already know what I was thinking about! A couple of Labour candidates in very safe seats stepped down yesterday - so late that there was sadly no time for the CLP to elect candidates. The NEC 'had no choice' but to directly nominate people, and like everywhere else it seems to be the case that these people happen to be from London, and also very close to Starmer.
They’ll not make the mistake of making a person of colour again after the hammering they take in July. Sadly someone of colour is completely unelectable in this country in my opinion.
Colour shouldn't matter...The best person for the job is all that should matter. I was pinning hopes on Chuka Umunna who I felt would have been a good leader. Spoke well, intelligent and didn't get flustered in interviews..Sadly walked away. A labour member I kno thinks Rachel Reeves will get the job after Starmer.
It shouldn’t matter but do we really think people in the ‘red wall’ are going to vote for a man of Indian heritage? I don’t think a lot of people in Barnsley would.
