    And, until we find a way of asking the horses what they think, it should be banned. In my opinion of course.

    That's the worst argument I've ever heard! There's technically worse things happening than the Derbyshire fire but that doesn't mean the Philpotts should be allowed to continue.

    Mr Ed spokesman for HISU (Horses In Sport Union) said that his members had voted and very few neighs had been recorded so the ayes had it, so horses would like to take part in the Grand National and fulfill theirs dreams of being a champion.

    Exactly right. But if people can not safeguard the welfare of an innocent animal, what are their chances with wider issues with more serious and deep reaching consequences? Likewise, if the popular opinion and measure of what is right and wrong, is so heavily governed by the right wing, capitalist media, what will happen to an individual to be to think for itself and make an ethical decision whether that be a horse that has been killed in the name of entertainment or the war in Palestine?

    What has that got to do with anything? I don't see how justifying past successes of do-gooding and meddling in completely different areas justifies it here.

    The argument is about a horse race, not sex scandals or workhouses or anything else.

    I happen to think there's a valid point here, if the fences were taller the horses would approach slower. So shortening them increased the speed and the therefore the risk of falls, creating more fatalities.

    Make them taller, perhaps with these new soft cores, that could be effective. Give it a few years to make sure it's working, then judge it.
