I know an ex-professional keeper (his career was ended very early by a badly broken arm, so he's not famous but HAS been exposed to all the recent coaching techniques) and he insists that the reason keepers appear so poor at kicking us because whereas once upon a time goal kicks were simply launched straight up the middle of the pitch over the centre circle, coaches are now obsessed with hitting the flanks - the idea being you still get the ball halfway up the pitch but have a better chance of ball retention (not sure I see how that's the case). The downside being , of course, that you're aiming towards the touchline 40-50 yards away and the margin for error is much smaller than a simple punt up the middle and so the ball often skews out of play.

I'd rather see teams play out from the back, good passing football, retaining possession.
