Its all a matter of control

All dogs have the potential to be dangerous in some degree, Farnhams Corgi incident is an illustration. Jack Russell Terriers are similar in temprement and go into there environment without invitation at your own risk. There is no dog more dangerous than an army attack dog, or a police dog etc, but you dont hear many cases of those animals attacking (without just cause). They are under control at all times. Control is only as strong as the weakest link, that may be a person or a weak spot in a securing perimiter, or quite often both as recent cases have been. When a dog is left to its own devices it reverts to pack animal intinct, and when on its own is obviously No1, small child making noise or crawling around becomes a threat to the No 1 spot hence the attacks. Dogs have a totally different physcology to humans and unfortuately most humans dont recognise this..e.g. how many owners make a fuss of the dog when it returns home from a running away session, not many usually it gets a punishment (to teach it not to do it again) the dog however associates the punishment with coming back not running away . I am all for dog ownership, but it should be responsible ownership and there should have to be a tested qualification for any person wishing to purchase one.. Never happen but it should, and dogs should also have to have a 3rd party insurance certificate and a licence like a vehicle and an MOT at a vet once a year. That might slow some irresponsible dog owners down.......... rant over

Only ever owned 1 dog , and she only barked when the doorbell rang.

Soft as a brush as well , although I suspect her previous owners weren't too good to her hence her relative quietness.

Like it's been said, all dogs have the potential to

cause injury, it's the fact that the bigger and stronger the dog the more serious the injuries are likely to be and the more difficult it is to stop any attack. If the dog is there as primarily a guard dog rather than a pet then there is no way it should ever be left alone with a child, particularly a small child. Even if the dog is a pet and isn't used to children then there is still a danger. Even pet dogs should always be supervised where there are small or unfamiliar children around, it's just common sense.

The thing about certain breeds is that they attract a certain type of owner and that is the problem with particular breeds getting a bad name. How many Bull terriers are called Tyson and are owned by some shaven headed idiot for example?

It must be higher than 12.

Lets take the number of shaven headed idiots in Britain:

    1.2 million

of those the number that own Bull Terriers:

    3,327

and how many of those are called Tyson:

    2,780

(the others all being called Geoff)

All figures are taken from the 2001 Census and so are slightly out of date.

    You misunderstood

    I'm guessing at 12 o'clock is what I meant.

My guess is just under 3,000.

    Some good points

Any merit in bringing back a dog licence ?

How many half wits that want a dog for show would bother if they had to fork out an extra £100 each year ?
