There's record numbers of illegals crossing the channel everyone when caught up with has to be housed tracked and given benefits until their application is processed last I heard there was 70k application backlog. I don't think you're necessarily racist, but you are ignorant.

The use of "illegals" is misleading. At present there is basically no way to legally claim asylum without being here first. So in order to submit a valid claim you have to get here "illegally". The government rails against the gangs bringing people over, but their policies create the market for them. If we had a system whereby people could apply in advance it would be better for everyone. Those who are approved can organise safe passage, those who are rejected know they will be rejected and so don't need to risk their lives on a small boat crossing. All of this would be incredibly sensible but it seems the government is happy to be complicit on people smuggling and the deaths of immigrants in service of the culture war.

As for "if we aren't soft why do they choose us?" the simple answer for the vast majority is because they have family here or speak English.

 

I’ve already posted the proof that they’d have been financially better off in other countries.

So remove the blinkers and ask yourself:
What happened a couple of years ago that led to the numbers of channel crossings (not illegal btw) growing exponentially ?
Why do people jump straight to mentioning it when someone has asked a question about help required by a fellow Barnsley citizen? It’s frankly disgusting that a plea for advice turns into this and it ought to be obvious to you why it happens.

Is the low amount based on savings? Someone I know when they lost their job were entitled to very little as they had a fully paid off home so to DWP didn't need the cash.

Savings and a home are two completely different things. If you own a home but have no savings the home doesn’t affect any means testing. However if you don’t own your home but have >£16k in savings, you’d not be entitled to anything until the savings reduced. Pension is not counted as savings, however in specific circumstances assets might be, but that’s getting into really niche areas.
Also, ESA-C isn’t means tested, and that should have been the first port of call in the OP.

Wrong I think it will be paid from the date of the claim. Assessment can be months later.

The details don’t add up.
I’m beginning to think you haven’t seen any of my helpful posts here. But as I said in the first post. His initial claim should have been for conts based ESA if he’s previously been working and paying his conts. It’s not means rested and he’d have been paid straight away.

If he’s not been consistently paying his conts, he’d have to claim UC, but with sick notes there’s no way that a work coach would have deemed him to have made himself unemployed*.

*contrary to another post, it is quite possible that people are sanctioned if they’re considered to have stopped working of their own volition. However, that wouldn’t be a consideration if someone was too sick to work.

 

From the O P evidence I presume the chap has good medical evidence of being unfit for work at least from the time of going into the coma, probably before. If he had gone through the ESA claim with the DWP he'll have been asked when the claim should start. Then provide drs notes to back it up.
