Im with Mario on this.. It was a bitter pill to swallow when after 2 days of effort, and folk telling me I was wasting my time, I got to the ground against Watford and saw the 'crowd'..
I wont be doing owt this time. Im a PAYING supporter, not a PAID employee in BFC's marketing department.
Im doing my bit online, but spending ten hour traipsing the street for nay reward? Not this time..
    Lazy, cheapskate employees at t'well

I think one or two copped for a mouthful when they were handing them out. maybe the playing staff would be better received doing it?

Yep. I was abused by a few chavs.. quite comical really. Although, it was rather annoying when they ripped the posters off the bus stop, then ran off when I got near.. little fcuks

Well if they are that hung up on the cost of marketing and advertising then nothing's really going to change.

    New broom needed imho.

    PS

The costs of utilising their database are minimal.

Having just read all this thread for the first time i do feel your response to EN was uncalled for and i see where he is coming from.

Does BFC actually have a marketing department? I am not just talking about getting the corporate boxes filled by businesses on match days but the man in the street supporter that the club appears to be losing touch with.

Having read back through it in the cold light of day I would agree with you and apologise to Extremely Northern. It's just frustrating somtime reading the constant negativity that doesnt seem to account for the reality of the situation. The club are working on a shoestring budget, the money or resources aren't there to throw at a grand marketing scheme that may or may not see a temporary increase in numbers. Contrary to belief on here the marketing people work long hours already.

I agree entirely, and noone is expecting them to run full colour spreads in the nationals etc etc.

The prices are good. That's step one of two. The next thing is to get the message out there. Fowk have put plenty of ideas on here before but it always just ends up as 'here, please put a poster up'.

Street Team (for every game, mind). This isn't just putting posters up, but delivering leaflets, calling customers etc etc. Ask for 4 hours work in return for a ticket.
    SMS/letter campaign (from database)
Dearne FM, Hallam FM, Radio Sheffield press releases (FREE)

You don't need barrels of money, you just need some imagination. We're getting there with the programme and Barnsley Player but this, to me, is much more important.

    Apology accepted.

But utilising the clubs database is not a 'grand' scheme.

I know how much a newspaper and radio advert costs and even with a depleted budget if it's beyond the scope of BFC to even have a qaurter or one eigth page in the Barnsley Star then it really is time to pack up.

Advertising budgets are amongst the first things to go in hard times so companies are more than willing to do a deal, especially with a high profile client like a football club where repeat business could be forthcoming.

If the club is going to focus on Facebook (for example) to the exclusion of most other things then it's targetting a very small demographic imho.

The point is taken that 'fans' will naturally know we've got a game, but do those same fans who have lost a bit of interest know about these offers ? What about the expanding student population in barnsley ? Alright they may only come to those 3 games but so what ? It's additional revenue and if 5% (a very good take up) come to mor egames then so much the better.

This isn't the tired old pop at the 'marketing dept' - I know the individuals and they are good people, they can only do what is within the remit given to them. I just wish we had more imagination from on high.

There was an advert in the Chron on Friday on the back page and the Star and Yorkshire Post have mentioned it. Seen it on other stuff too

    The thing about Facebook/Twitter

You don't actually advertise to those 8,000 and 4,000 followers, or whatever the numbers are - not everybody logs in on that day, bothers to read, or even notices the post. Most of the time you only end up advertising to the same core 5% of fans/followers, and most of them are season ticket holders anyway if you actually read the comments.

Facebook/Twitter is the bare minimum that the club need to be doing, so without being harsh they can't be praised for it. Not doing it would be instant gross misconduct any road.

Loads of ideas floating about that never get used, some of which don't cost the earth.

I've said it many times before but I don't see why our club cannot offer work experience or internships to media and/or marketing students. The students get a decent bit of work history to put on their CVs and to gain them experience, and us as a club get free labour but the chance to take in lots of new ideas and maybe find some worth taking on down the line. We can easily get in touch with colleges and universities in places like Barnsley, Sheffield, Huddersfield, Leeds etc and I bet each place would be delighted to get some of their students working for us.

If needed they could get in touch with the local job centre also to try and get some people so recent work history on their CVs doing voluntary work for them. There are so many different departments of Barnsley FC that could get free help such as.....

Media students to help out Mark Stokes with arranging interviews with press, helping with the matchday programme and official website.

Offer a few placements for those in college wanting to do Retail NVQs and put them in the club shop and/or ticket office.

Find some that wish to do gardening and that to help out our ground staff.

Find some English Lit students who can proof read things before they go to print in the matchday programme or can write pieces for it if given enough notes to do so.

Treat them like adults, listen to their ideas (which should be good if they have decided to get qualified in that field to hopefully make a living from it) and in the end we might make more money as a club which in turn means some of the better people can be rewarded with full time paid employment.
