Not sure if it’s been announced yet but just been advised Government will be announcing a package of support for small individual businesses on Monday 23rd March. At this point I have no clue what is in it or what it is about but hopefully it will help some people
Boris has just said that tomorrow there will be an announcement of a ‘package for workers’ - not sure what he means by that. In my opinion, the only answer is UBI for 6 to 12 months, give the country time to suppress the disease while a vaccine is worked on.
He mentioned working with the Trade Unions on the package, he also mentioned that he recognises that last time in 2008 they protected the banks above the people and that won't happen this time. Now, if Boris told me it was sunny outside, I'd wrap up and bring an umbrella, so we will see. I'm cautiously optimistic, though.
I am freelance and my job has been put on hold for an estimated 2 months but who knows how long really. No wages coming in for that period
This is the reason the money should go to workers, not to companies. There are a lot of people in your shoes. Selfishly, I'm going to be alright. (I feel extremely guilty that this is the case, but then I feel guilty for feeling guilty, as I'm just supporting my family) My work as yet hasn't dried up. I also have some cash in savings, just in case. My work is extremely volatile at times. I would feel guilty about taking a UBI cheque. One thing that I would suggest is that the tax brackets are altered so that those in higher tax brackets end up paying it back over the next year or so, in tax. I would certainly feel better about that, anyway.
I'm freelance and half of my work has disappeared in one fell swoop. The minimum income floor shafted me when I had to migrate from Working Tax Credit to Universal Credit and now this. They have now temporarily removed the minimum income floor, but I'll wait and see what April brings before I try reclaiming Universal Credit.
