Not worked there but spent a couple of weeks there 10 years ago backpacking. Thought Manilla was a bit dodgy and seedy, headed down to Batangas then via ferry to Puerto Galera on Oriental Mindoro which was better.  Lots of poverty everywhere, and if you are heading off the beaten track you'll need your malaria jabs!

I have been there many many times...

If you are planning on going there I would wholeheartedly recommend it, but only if you are the adventurous type. Manila is a first class sh1thole on the surface, but is one of those places that truly grows on you if you make the effort - kind of like Bombay (Mumbai). The nightlife is something else... ranges from highly sophisticated to some of the seediest in the world, & I've tried it all - be careful though as it can become addictive! For a real experience a couple of nights in Angeles City will open your eyes!

Outside of Manila, you will find some of the most beautiful & unspoilt scenery to be found anywhere. Just google Boracay to see what I mean. Puerto Galera offers brilliant diving for next to nothing & the hills near Baguio are worth exploring.

Filipinos are generally nice people (although the women are crazy) - of course as a poor country they are always looking for ways to make a dollar or two out of you. As long as you remember that, you are fine.

About working there though... a word of caution. A close friend of mine worked there for around 5 years in the 90s. He worked in TV production, but never really managed to get his business off the ground due to the inefficiency of the Filipino workers & infrastructure. He found it all incredibly frustrating & much as he loved the country had to give up & set up shop elsewhere.

Last point... it's one of the cheapest & best places in the world to visit, & as long as the ignorant rest of the world continues to regard it as a dangerous & dirty sh1thole it will remain that way... fantastic!

RE: lived ther on and off for 6 years all over the place

great people great food manilla is a great place to live and a goodsized expat community who are ok my wife is half flip flop and we have land in manilla and cebu but it is very difficult to start developing as once the white face shows up the price goes through the roof apparently her grandfather used to be chief of police and the family have a road named after them.
so why do you want to know are you thinking of a holidy or something more permanent?

That's alright then... some folks try to defend them, but always come to the same conclusion eventually :D

I've been asked to run a club there. The biggest problem is that I'd have to travel to and fro' and it's a bit of a schlep. There are other things going on so I might have a look at getting involved in something. My mate who has all the concerns out there loves the place.
