I went to watch a u23 game quite a few weeks ago. It's the one where Pearson played Centre back. He was quite vocal and the coaches praised him for it in stoppages when players went down injured or whatever. He wasn't the most vocal player on the pitch though. Jarrad Bird was. He was the one setting the basics and if you didn't meet his standards he was telling you. Young Amir (first year scholar) backed out of a 50/50 and he was told so the world could hear what he was to do the next time. Then you have Smith at right back that was also constantly talking but in a different way. Communicating with the players around him in a lot quieter way. Positional stuff. People on here can say we need to change the captain. I agree at this time but the basics need to be set on the training ground. Does Barnes get away with not tracking back in a small side game? I say this because I heard Rio Ferdinand talking about Keane at MU. He said he was very harsh with those other players around him but the standard was set at Carrington.
Liam Lindsay isn't or won't ever be as good as Fernando Torres, Francesco Totti or Neymar. There you go. I've reluctantly stuck my neck out. Definitely a better footballer than Graeme Smith though.
Quite true, but what you are really talking about is a club captain. If what is missing is a leader on the pitch, then we should have a team captain on the pitch. Could be 2 different people.
I’m not sure we can change he captain as I’m not sure we have one. MacDonald isn’t playing well. Maybe the captaincy is a reason. Davo has been poor and has captained a lot too. But realistically who else is there? We clearly lack a leader.
This thread illustrates the lack of an experienced leader on the field. The thing many of us were saying we needed at the start of the season. For me one experienced pro at either CM or CB would make all the difference to this team. Worth paying one player more than the youngsters to give that guidance & leadership on the pitch. There are plenty of players we could attract, with a view to them joining the coaching staff at the end of their career, if they put the graft in. With our academy & growing reputation as a side that develops players this sure would be of appeal to ex premiership players.
The one thing I’ll say about MacDonald is when we concede a goal & the players walk back to the centre circle he sulks & that shouldn’t happen. It should be head up dishing the orders out & getting his team mates going. Hourihane & Scowen were brilliant at it all 2016
