I'll try to help you out here before you dig yourself into a big hole trying to defend the indefensible .

England Cricketers are sometimes crap, but occasionally win things, giving the country a nice warm patriotic feeling. e.g. the Ashes.

England Rugby Union Players are sometime crap, but occasionally win things, giving the country a nice warm patriotic feeling e.g The Rugby World Cup, The 6 Nations.

England's footballers however, are often crap, and never win anything. Even the corners they win are pointless, because the elite of English football can't even put a set piece within 10 yards of a team-mate.

When other European countries (Germany, France, Italy, Spain ) are crap at football, they have a review and change things. They come back stronger and win tournaments. England however, with all the resources at its disposal, comes back with the same ethos, and the same utterly crap performances. Winning absolutely nothing.

That's not fair and I can't let you get away with such a slur. Have you completely forgotten that we won Le Tournoi in 1997 beating the mighty Brazil in the final. We never win anything? Pfft.

He's brought this up about cricket when they're winning. Sri Lanka are decimated from retirements and injuries.
England football wouldn't beat Athersley Rec. Regardless off retirements or injuries.

You understand this is more than just results Ryhill. So don't give me that. I believed it was right when they didn't get the results in SA some 6 month ago

The cricket team have 11 players who know their role, they know exactly what is expected of them and they are coached to perform their role irrespective of County, media perception or bias- over to you England football team....

The problem is that you can't compare the two sports, like for like. Football's biggest failing (or at least one of them) is that so many managers/coaches think it is a great idea to play someone in a position that is strange to them. Forwards playing wing back, or midfield etc etc. Shoe-horning Rooney into midfield because there is no room for him up front is a good example. I'd like to see the evidence of his so-called great passing ability.

Normally cricketers go out and play in their strongest position. You don't normally ask the square leg fielding specialist to play as wicket keeper. I know that in this series Bairstow is playing "out" because Buttler is in goal. But that is totally excusable because Bairstow is both a fantastic fielder ANYWHERE and knows how to smash the ball over the ropes.

Cricket coaches and captains tend to stick to what suits the players on the field. If you are a brilliant slip fielder then that is where you play, unless the game temporarily dictates that slips are not needed. Whatever happens, cricketers in an international side tend to look good most of time. Contrast that with England footballers who tend to look BAD most of the time.
