It appears so Don't get be wrong, his work on the ball and in possession can be a joy, as his range of passing can verge on the sublime. However, out of possession he's a liability and offers nothing. Unfortunately - I don't think, in today's game - you can carry players like that and, especially in our current set up, he's a luxury we can ill afford. The only way I can see him fitting in the team is in 4-2-3-1 formation - as one of the two - and that's only if we get some one next to him to do all the dirty the work. It'll be interesting to see how Conor deals with him as there is no one better at understanding the position.
I think you have hit the nail on the head. With Russell and Phillips both being, in truth, luxury players, the shortcomings in Nwakali’s game, that have resulted in him being in League One, are exposed. Perhaps it’s a similar situation with Connell, because he looks nothing like the player of two seasons ago. But in terms of the progressive attributes I enjoy seeing in a midfielder Nwakali is head and shoulders better than anyone else.
I agree with this. On the ball he looks like he should be playing at a much higher level than league 1 but off the ball he looks like he’s having a kick about with his mates. I guess that’s why he’s with us in league 1. Russell is kind of similar. I would say he works harder but his “tackle” is often just putting his arm outstretched on to the back of the opposition player. The player either runs away from him or gets a foul. Jon has done the business in front of goal this season though to be fair to him. It will be interesting to see what happens over the summer but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Nwakali depart back to a less physical, more tippy tappy passing league.
