Don't know why I didn't do this in the first place. The Cambridge English Dictionarys definition of a rolling contract is:

"A contract that continues until someone decides to end it, rather than one that continues until a particular date.
You may be asked to consider whether you prefer a rolling contract i.e. one which continues until the required period of notice is given".

What we don't know in Hecky's case is what is that specific clause, but we do know ( if the papers are believed) there is a review date viz: 30 th June each year.

He was heavily linked to Forest and Norwich wasn't he?

Would we call Zola a big named manager.? He was certainly a big named player but has not done very well in Club management in England. I was on holiday in Lake Garda and he was on his way to England to watch Chelsea in a final and I accidentally collided with him on the way out of Verona airport. I apologised and had a chat with him. He seemed to be a really nice bloke.
He appeared really chuffed when I said he was a legend as far as the majority of British soccer fans were concerned.

Agree with that. Like you say, without knowledge of the contract, it's pure speculation.

I'd assume in its simplest form that should a manager on a 12 month rolling contract be dismissed, then they'd be entitled to be paid the equivalent of 12 months salary in lieu of notice. Same if a club wanted our manager for themselves, they'd have to pay us the same amount (as a minimum) to effectively buy him out of the contract.

What happened with Robins was a strange one. He didn't take another job for 12 months so I wonder if we gave him notice of 12 months? Clearly we wouldn't have wanted him at the club if he'd declined to work within the tighter budget, but did we actually sack him or simply give notice?

If my memory serves me right he would not accept the budget constraints and resigned. He was out of the game for quite some time after that. Went on to manage Huddersfield and Scunny. Been linked with a return to Rotherham but don't know how realistic that might be. Early signs are they're sticking with Paul Wharne.

He's a big name in management, just not a big success. To back up your 'nice bloke' story though, do you remember when West Ham sacked him and the press vultures were hovering at the bottom of his drive. Rather than hide behind the curtains, be brought them a tray of tea out and spoke openly with them.

Yes I remember that. During the ten minutes I chatted with him I told him I supported the Reds. He was very complimentary saying he remembered it as a very family friendly Club like some he knew of in Italy.
We reminisced about our one and only season in the Prem. He of course featured in the Chelsea team in our 6-0 hammering at Oakwell ( Petrescu, Poyet and Vialli 4). The stand out team for me that season were the Gunners. Their defence was like a steel trap. You could hear Seaman, Winterburn, Dixon and Keown shouting to each other as they pinged passes one to the other. Bergamp was brilliant that day and the goal that Overmars scored was one of the best Ive ever seen. He chested it between two of our defenders and volleyed it past Dave Watson all in one movement.
Arsenal of course won the title that year. It was great hearing Reds fans chanting " F*ck all you're gonna win f*ck all " in the Man Utd game. My seat was in the West Stand lower terrace so you could see the players close up.
We lost 2-0 but it was memorable to watch an animated Ferguson who was seething at the chants on the touch line.
